OAHU: We chose Oahu for the sole purpose of seeing Pearl Harbor. We felt that as long as we were making the trip to Hawaii, it was a critical part of history to be seen and remembered. My father was also a WWII veteran andit was important to him. We went here first because Pearl Harbor is a solemn place, a resting place for soldiers and we did not want to end our honeymoon on a solemn note - something to consider. However, I felt that there wasn't much else to see. Honolulu was very commercial and the shopping was no different from NY.
KAUAI: It was just beautiful and had so many excursions and opportunities for sight seeing. Amazing beaches. We took a catamaran ride and saw whales and dolphins.
HAWAII: We never gave it much thought until our travel agent suggested we go to the volcano at Mt Kilauea. We did the crater rim drive and then drove 20 miles followed by a hike to see an active lava flow. It was one of the most amazing things we ever saw.
MAUI: Again, gorgeous beaches. MANY opportunities for excursions and luaus. It is slightly commercial, but not nearly as much as Oahu.

We went to three islands: Lanai, Maui and Oahu
We were just discussing how much we wish we could go back. If we could do it all again we would defiintely spend more time on Lanai- WE LOVED IT! It is so quiet and peaceful which was a great way to start off our honeymoon, but we were also very active there. We stayed at the Four Seasons Manele Bay and did the 4X4 package so an activity was included every day. And the beach there was awesome- it was rated #1 by Dr. Beach a few years ago.
I would also definitely recommend Maui. There is so much to do and it was a lot of fun.
And Oahu was great, we stayed on the North Shore at the Turtle Bay Resort so there wasn't much to do there, but it was away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki which was nice. But if we had to skip one of the three it would have been Oahu.

Oahu, Waikiki and Honolulu specifically are very commercial....not what you want when you're thinking gorgeous, lush, serene Hawaii. It's really like any other city, but with palm trees and hula skirts, I'd skip it. Kauai (sp?) is where a friend of mine went on her honeymoon and she said she'd never seen anyplace so beautiful.
