I have an old friend that I know is in the airforce and I believe that he is reserve. He actually just got married a few years ago and they are expecting their first kid sometime soon I think.

I'm not really close with him or that whole crew of friends anymore so I can't say how it affects the wife but I was there when he first went off for whatever reason for 6 months and I know the wife (his GF at the time) was very upset for weeks after he left. It's tough I know.

My cousin's husband was in the Air Force. And FH is in the Merchant Marines (just finished his recertification paperwork yesterday, actually). I'm sure you can get through it, be strong, hang in there, and surround yourself with supportive friends.

that's a tough situation. My SIL's younger brother is in the Army and got married and I know his wife is w/o him for a good amount of time, but they've made it work and i'm sure you will too!

i guess... i guess because we are always near each other all the time - our houses are 3min away and we are always at the gym together, diner etc etc

whew! this is tough
but i guess it will make us stronger - we need kind of need a break from each other - in a good way!

That's really tough. I know my cousin who just got married in Feb. 09 has a hard time with it, but her husband was actually in Afghanistan. She got pregnant on her HM and he didn't even get to meet his daughter until her christening! And then he had to leave again. Now he's *finally* back, but there was a long time where she was on her own. Did he discuss this with you before signing up?

FH is in the AF for another almost two years, has been active duty for a little over the past 3 years and is going into the reserves when his enlistment is up. It definitely has its benefits but it also has negatives...like the distance. Which I know all about since he's stationed in Alaska currently deployed in Guam and I'm here finishing my bachelor's. It's a steady paycheck and GREAT health insurance but you have to really know your relationship, everyones different.

Oh and edited to say FH is taking a month of leave for the wedding and honeymoon. It's they vacation time which they earn every month and they really can't tell him they can't take it.

yea im pretty sure with reserves you really dont get leave or anything, so idk if right before the wedding is the best time for this, like someone said theres really no guarantee he will be off on your wedding day.....after you sign up, they own you ! Other than that concern, reserves is nothing compared to enlisted, It doesn't take up that much time.

Yeah they pretty much do own you. But you are correct, reserves you only report one weekend a month and there's a base on LI.

I'm sorry-i don't know much about the Airforce but just wanted to tell you not to be too upset. He's probably thinking long term and caring for his family

nah, he just wants to fly airplanes... lol but yes he is thinking long term... he heart is set on being active, not reserve... but he feel like being reserve is a compromise ... i dont want to stop a man from doing what they wanna do but this isnt easily to swallow.....
