Health Insurance

So fh just called me at work.....good news-he got a raise we didnt think he would get one since his boss just sent us on a cruise and is paying for our hm....but he's just a nice guy I guess.
Well, when it comes to anything with money, fh just starts thinking about everything. So right now I am working part time and I go back to school full time again in January-no insurance. FH job does not offer insurance....so his question is what are we going to do? I am going to school for teaching, and a job is a long way down the road....neither one of us would be covered under our parents since we are 24 and to get it on our own is like $700 a month!!-any suggestions? tia

Try Atlantis Health Plans....singles are 383 a month..I used to work for a health insurance brokerage and they could help you out...their number is 800-277-5011 and you can get a quote right over the phone and apply right over the phone! It is worth a shot!

Healthy NY all the way. If you meet their very low maximum household income (which you might if you are going back to school full-time), then you are eligible for full insurance (similar coverage to what you would get if you were covered via an employer) for very reasonable rates.

I know b/c I went back to school full time in Fall of 2005 and needed insurance. I used healthy ny until two months ago when I got married. You can choose from different carriers, premiums, etc.

First of all, I wish your FH's boss was my boss!!!
Secondly, depending on where you go to school you may be able to enroll in a plan with them. My old roommate did that when she was getting her masters and not working. She went to CW Post.

Re: Health Insurance

You can also try to get health insurance through your car insurance...my FH does this because we live in two different states and I can't put him on my insurance!

I was in the same situation and I used HealthyNY also..
I have Empire and pay 225/month...which seems like a lot...but hopefully it won't be for too much longer

I am subbing so no insurance and DH is self employed so for both of us its $800 a month, through Empire. We just have to suck it up. I have heard some bad things about healthy NY.

You could also just get emergency coverage.

Re: Health Insurance

be careful with insurance through school - it is VERY sparse. i had healthy new york for almost two years and never had a problem. you don't have healthy new york insurance. you pick an insurance carrier from a list of many national ones (ie cigna, aetna, ghi, etc) and you are in a pool with every other healthy ny member - similar to how you are in a pool with other employees when you have work insurance.

i had cigna and it was about $224 per month. i used it constantly b/c i'm a diabetic so i have to see the doctor every six weeks (including blood exams) and refill continuously on medication, and i never had a problem.

like i said, there are income limitations, but they will send you all the info you need and you can choose based on the carrier you want, monthly premium (which varies based on the carrier), and whatever else is important to you.

Honestly i have no insurance adn havn't had insurance in five years. I just pay by cash and only go to the doctors for emergencys. I can't afford $200 or more a month for anything w/ saving up for a wedding. You may have to rough it out unless fh can pay the bill for healhty ny.

I have NO health insurance, neither does DH right now cause he just started a new job. Hopefully he will have them soon beause he's almost 29, and he needs them! And I'll be 24 tmrw, and I need them. I was covered by my parents until 21,so the last few years, I have to pay for drs apts, full price, medicine, bc pills, . . . i AVOID going to the dr at every cost cause i can't afford it!

i would just look into the web and see if there is something the governemnt can do. my mom told me there is something that one person only has to pay $400 a month and theyre fully covered. i cant even afford that! and i dont get sick all that much . . . so to me, its not even worth it!

i know i probably wasn't a help . . . but good luck.
