What does everyone here do for health insurance? Here is our scenario. I have had Family Health Plus because I have been a student. I just graduated and DH is in the middle of establishing his own business. FHP has been great and they aren't going to drop me because of him but what does everyone do? Anyone out there whose DH have their own business? I am searching for a job but I am now an official, certified UNEMPLOYED teacher I bartend and stuff for now but who is to say I will def have a job for Sept KWIM? Ugh, why is health insurance so complicated!!!! We are all human, we need medical care, we should get it at an affordable rate!...

Re: Health Insurance
And we are the only industrialized country NOT to have universal healthcare, sad, isn't it?
Anyway, I have my own health insurance through my job, we also have health insurance through GHI because my DH works for the city.
Does your DH not have any insurance at all? Maybe he wants to look into an inexpensive private policy that would just cover some type of catastrophe.
If I were you, I'd stay on Family Health Plus until you find a job, then it may take 30,60 or 90 days to actually be put on the health insurance.

Well my husband is starting his own business he has none and getting your own seems so expensive!!! Last time they renewed me I was not married yet so his income didn't count. The next time they will ask the household income and probably boot me off. I just want to get him Aflac or whatever but I NEED my insurance (woman problems).

How often do they update you?
He should get Aflac or SOMETHING, I mean, I know it is expensive, but god forbid he has to go to an ER, then that runs into the thousands at a clip.
And I am sure you don't want to, but as an FYI, Starbucks offers health insurance to its employees.

Yeah but look at the netherlands who have universal healthcare, they take 60% of their paycheck, Americans would not want that at all...Over there its a different lifestyle, everyone likes being at the same level, they dont have this competition thing, to have better cars, better clothes and all that, so the 60% is ok to them.
Plus in alot of places where they have universal healthcare, they dont have the greatest hospitals...For anything you go to a hospital, waits are insane

Re: Health Insurance
FH and I own our own business and we didn't have health insurance of offer it to our employees for a long time. (couldn't afford it). But last year I had some woman problems out of no where. I collapsed and I had to have emergency surgery within a few hours and the bill for everything came out to over $30,000
So now we have it through Healthy NY and its so worth it. I can find out some more info if you are interested.

Re: Health Insurance
My uncle has a thriving surveying company. After years of battling through the whole insurance scenario, he has given up and established HSAs for his company for the employees. It simply was going to run his business into the ground to cover his employees. He doesn't even have actual 'insurance' for his household b/c of the cost.
Luckilly, my job offers me free of charge insurance...and with a 2nd kid on the way, I really need it. I do have a high deductible, but all 'check ups' are FREE. So short of broken legs and pneumonia, it's costing me very little. I also have AFLAC to help with things...if I break my leg, AFLAC will pay me $$$ so it will almost be free to get injured. [it costs $7 week for my whole family, no matter how big we get]
