Health Insurance?

Health Insurance?

So...FH now has a job that enabled him to move here. It pays great, but as it is an hourly job and its a 'temporary' they do not offer health insurance. He can buy into the plan, but I'm not sure how much it is.

Anyway, the problem is that he got info on COBRA from his old job...they want over $750/month to insure him and his daughter!! We cannot afford such a high price...

Does anyone know of any insurance plans we can apply for?? FH makes good money so I know he is not eligible for many plans...and honestly if FSD is covered and he is not then we'll deal with that. If that is the case does anyone know of any prescription plans??

I already have the paperwork for Family Health Plus and Child Health Plus...anything else I should know about??

Thanks so much in advance!!!

I would double check the cobra prices, I am changing jobs and I know Obama passes something that made my cobra coverage A LOT less.

You can try Healthy NY. When I lost my job about 3 years ago I was on that because Cobra was over $400 a month and I couldn't afford it. It think for a single person it's about $125, I'm not sure about a child but you can look into it.

When I lost my job, my FH was able to cover me as a 'domestic partner'. You just have to prove that you live together and are not related (lol). Not all companies will do it but it definately saved me a lot of $. You should see if your job will let you do that. Can FSD's mother cover her?

There is also child health plus which is just for children. I think the premiums are based on income.

I didn't realize you already mentioned Child health plus-oops!

definitely look into the 'domestic partnership' option....my fiance lost his job....and my benefits guy said that he's not going to ask for 'proof' of if he's been living with me for a year or not (that was one of the stipulations)....he said, if you're comfy with it, then that's all that matters. good luck!

Re: Health Insurance?

I hate to say it but 750 for him and his daughter is a pretty good price. I had to get my own insurance once and it was almost 600 for just me and this was years ago.

He will probably not qualify for the NYS program unless he is making close to the minimum wage. But I think that his daughter would qualify but she might have to live in state (dont know if she does).

Is there any type of group he can belong to???? I know my sis can get benefits through a freelancers union and I got them for a bit through the American Bar Association.....look around on the internet in his field of work. you never know what you'll find.

Def try this...SD might qualify on her own.

Re: Health Insurance?

For his daughter, he can insure her under Child Health Plus. This is for people that make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but can not afford to purchase regular insurance. It is discounted insurance offered thru the state of NY. I have CHP for my daughter thru Blue Cross Blue Shield. A few different insurance companies offer it.

Do a google search for 'New York State Child Health Plus'.

His daughters ins would be under $100 most likely, and it covers everything even dental and vision.

I second this.....when I was a sub, that's what i had....fortunately i don't have any heath issues, but it covered me incase of an emergency

Re: Health Insurance?

Unfortunately, even if we applied for domestic partnership (which we can't since we've only been living together for 2-3 weeks lol) I would not be able to put him on my insurance...I work for my mom and she can't afford to cover all 3 of us on the insurance.

Unfortunately it seems as if our best course of action will be to get coverage for FSD (who will live in-state come August) and FH will have to go without until he finds a job that includes benefits. We'd ask the baby mama but she makes minimum wage and supports her whole family herself and lives in Georgia so that's out.

Thanks for the advice girls...I'll definitely be exploring a couple of these options!!

Re: Health Insurance?

I work in a city hospital and I can get you the # for our insurance area. Also just so you know city hospitals (in the 5 boros) offer all services on a fee scale basis, even for FH.

Let me know if you want the info

I use Aetna Healthy NY also but I'm not sure the amount that you are allowed to gross per month 'on the books'..though I just did it..I wanna say no more than 2300?.. I pay about $320/ mo.
Here is the # for Member Services off my card if you want to call & ask: 866-386-1371. good luck
