HELP!

Does anyone have any good suggestions as far as if you are ABOVE high risk for a heart attack what you should be eating? My dad just got back from the drs and told me this last night and I'm low carbing but am not sure how to suggest helping him. I think the high fat might do him more harm than good. Any thoughts?? THANKS!

Re: HELP!

I truly think the healthiest way to eat...is using natural foods...get rid of the premade foods...make dinner from scratch...eat high fiber...complex carbs (don't get rid of them!!!! - but get rid of the simple ones...like white flour and regular pasta)

also starting off with some moderate exercise will do wonders...

Re: HELP!

Whatever you do, keep him off Atkins and South Beach.

I've said this before (sorry for the repeats), but when your body doesn't have enough carbs to burn, it must burn protein for energy (the concept behind Atkins, et al). However, when protein is burned, a biproduct of that chemical reaction is created that is specifically bad for your heart. Doctors say that if you have a history of heart disease in your family you should stay far away from low carb diets.

My Dad had a heart attack three years ago, and he recently had angioplasty. This is because he hasn't really worked at losing the weight. I do know that for awhile he was trying the American Heart Association's dietary guidelines - check that out.

To you, and I hope your Dad gets better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: HELP!

Thanks everyone!! I appreciate you all taking the time to help me out!! I will sit down and talk to him about his diet and he said he's going to start going to the gym and taking better care of himself. Hopefully if he knows he has people behind him that will help as well! I hope you're all having a happy and healthy new year!
