Lisa that completely Sucks!! I think you need to tell your Dad. I know Scott might get bad but it is a family business. I think Dad needs to bring in an independent auditor to go over the books.

If they are equal partners........then they have equal rights to the books, accountant knowledge, etc...If I was your Dad, I would demand to see all the records from the past year (he should always know where they are anyway), and have a private meeting with the accountant. Unfortunately who knows what the accountant is getting 'under the table' to keep things quite, but perhaps it's time to go to another acctountant to go over everything!!

So sorry you are going through this - the best of luck to the family in working this out!

Family in business together is not always the best situation (I know I worked for family and it was the worst 5 years of my life).

Is there any way this business can be dissolved or split and your uncle and cousin can have their business and your father and dh can have theirs. It will probably be better for your father and dh to be away from uncle. He seems to want to pay his son a huge salary no matter what, even if it is not good for the business.

eta - It is a great idea to have an independent auditor come in and go over the books. If he was paying cousin 20k over what was agreed upon between the partners (which would really be illegal) who knows what else is going on!

Ah Lisa I am sooo sorry. Can your Mom give Dad a nudge. I would hate to see your uncle drain the business that your grandfather worked so hard to build!

Hopefully when your brother goes into the business he can investigate and find out more, as you siad. I guess until than, if your father does not want to persue it, you can't force him to. Maybe with teh salary he is getting more suspicous and will be willing to do something, as you said. It's a tough situation for you, because you want to help but not be too pushy.

I would suggest the same as others to get an independent auditor take a look at the books. Since your husband is involved too does he see anything suspicious besides the $900 limo services?

Lisa, this may sound like a bad idea, but you should absolutely talk to your dad.

From the way you described the situation, it looks as if your uncle is really trying to take the business up for himself and his son and quetly or not so quietly oust your dad. MY having DH working there it ruins or interferese with their plans, but it doesn't appear that the uncle is interested in having a partner. In addition to having the independent acct, I hightly suggest for your father to determine whether or not he wants to stay in that business as the coowner or if he wants to get out and get the cash. If he wants to stay, he absolutely must involve himself with all details and not let the uncle get the upper hand.

I have seen this happen (to my dad), so this is a definitely 'must talk' topic for you, your dad and DH.
