Help! Cat and vacation related-air conditoner question....
I am going away on vacation, and my sister was supposed to take my 2 cats for the week. Her husband is allergic, so she is going to be coming to my house to take care of them every day, I am nervous with this heat to leave them with no air conditioner. I was thinking can I leave the air conditioner on economy so it will turn on and off for them and some windows open, is it safe to do, the air conditoner is about 6 years old. Or should I buy an air conditoner timer, which I was told they sold at Home Depot or Radio Shack?I know I am being paronoid but these cats are like my babies to me.

Do you have a basement so they can hang out downstairs? It might be cool down there. Or maybe do you have a neighbor that you can have put the air on for a few hours if its really warm out?

Last time I went away on vacation I asked my neighbor to water my plants, she told me she would and she never did becuase it was too hot out to bring over a bucket of water, she had to walk over in the heat... I also had another neighbor tell me she was going to take in my paper and she left it against my house! My neighbors are the most unreliable and unfriendly bunch of people I know.

Do you have a friend that can watch them for you while you are away? Cats are pretty easy to care for. Maybe they can stay over someone's house.

I have three cats, and I have left my air conditioning on for them during the day for the past week. It's just TOO hot. I would suggest that you leave your AC on too, when you're away. It doesn't have to be blasting, just cool enough to take the humidity out of the air (leave it on the lowest setting). I wouldn't leave any windows open because it will counteract the effectiveness of the AC. It takes more power for it to try to cool down a room that warms up due to the windows open, or being on a timer, than it does to just have it on low for a longer period of time. I am facing the same situation when we go away on our honeymoon... someone is going to stop by every other day to feed the little monsters, and we're most likely going to leave our AC on the whole time (unless by some miracle the temperature dips below 85!)
Your kitties will thank you!

When we are going on our Honeymoon, no one can take our cat. So we are getting a timer for our air conditioner too. My mother will come at night to feed and play with her!! I worry about her too. But we went to Florida last year for the 4th and it was REALLY hot and this worked great!.

we leave the AC on 24/7 this time of year. it's on a timer, so we let it get a little warmer during the day (but still just 75). kitty hangs on the first floor of the condo where it is much cooler. i would definitely recommend leaving the AC on 24/7.

Maybe I am a cruel cat owner, but I do not leave my AC on for the cats... They are fine and they will survive... yes, the are hot- but they economize their energy by sleeping.. as long as you leave some windows open so they have a breeze and give them plenty of fresh water they will be fine. What do you think wild cats do? Or what do you think cats did before air conditioning- the species has been around for a long time and I think they survive just fine without the AC... I personally wouldn't feel safe leaving an appliance on that long...
