Also, check out my response on the 2013 board. It isn't that easy to file for, for insurance purposes anyway. I tried doing so bc FH's insurance is ridiculous and it is a lot (you MUST show financial interdependenc - own home together, both names on a lease, beneficiary on life insurance, etc and you need several)and takes a while to get state approval, or so I was told.

Thanks. FH is going to tell his boss what you said. His boss just thinks we can fill out a piece of paper and then bam he's under my insurance. His boss is being suck a jerk. It just really rubbed me the wrong way how his boss would just be like get a domestic partnership. Don't tell me what to do with my life. It just seems like he's pulling this out of his butt to make it seem ok that he's been teeling FH about full time since January and now to change it to a seasonal position.
You are so right, it's not his business. Sounds like my boss It's too expensive to get insurance as a small company so he just wants everyone to get married hah. Some people just shouldn't manage employees, ugh. I hope this works out for your FH, he really should say something and tell them it's impossible for him to be covered under your insurance. I wouldn't want him to go in there and complain so much that it backfires but he should really bring up what he's been promised. I hope it works out!!

I found out from my church that it would be ok but then I called my insurance and they don't even cover domestic partnerships. You have to be in a common law marriage or married

I'm so glad i'm getting married at my RH with a justice of the peace. I really don't have a choice but when I hear about all the drama and restrictions my friends have dealt with through their churches, it makes me glad my parents raised me agnostic.

Just curious- what defines common law marriage?

New York State does not recognize Common Law Marriage, so assuming that you live on LI, you're out of luck. Here's a link to a definition, and a list of the states that do: http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/human-services/common-law-marriage.aspx

Common law marriage is if you have been living with the person for 7 years and can prove it. My health insurance would cover that since it's a federal health insurance but we've only been living together a year
