HELP! Faucet question! I am desperate!!!!

We had a leaky faucet and fixed it ourselves. However when I go to put the faucet handle back on it is too high up, what did we do wrong? I am not in the mood to call a plumber. Maybe it was the washer screw holding it in at the base? HELP! PLEASE !!!!
