My FMIL is just about the same height as my FFIL when they are barefoot. SHe is VERY self conscious about being tall and even talks about how when she got married she wanted to wear ballet slippers but at that time every dress/shoe store was very nasty about a woman wearing flats with her wedding gown.
SHe has several weddings to go to this summer and is upset because she thinks you can't wear flats with a cocktail dress. I know it's not traditional, but I feel like you can....does anyone have pics of someone in a cocktail dress with flat dressy shoes? It would really help!

Re: Help for My FMIL
Your FMIL should wear whatever she feels comfortable in. It may not be very common to wear flat shoes but this is a big day for her as well and she should do whatever she feels comfortable doing. You might even want to suggest wearing a very low low low heel. My suggest is going to a shoe store for evening wear and scope out all the low shoes....good luck.
If she feels comfortable in flats then she should wear flats!

Re: Help for My FMIL
The year Lost In Translation was up for the Oscar, Sofia Coppola wore flats everywhere (I think she had foot problems.) Anyway, she looked great in everything from ballgowns to cocktail dresses. Might want to look for some pictures of her.

Re: Help for My FMIL
i think it's very acceptable to wear flats .. they make adorable dress flats now .. and they are actually quite trendy ... . If it makes your FMIL comfortable then she should do it.. no one is going to be worrying about her feet anyways!
here are a few pics i found
sorry the pics aren't bigger

Re: Help for My FMIL
Elle McPhearson always wears flats with her evening gowns. I just saw a picture in the June issue of Vogue. As long as the flats are dressy, a metallic or patent flat or sandal, that should look fine. What about very low kitten heels ?
