I need to have my wedding on a sat in june of 2006. i have been to tons of catering halls, but nothing has seemed just right yet. I always thought my wedding would be soo special... but a lot of the catering halls seem so blah, corny, tacky. Some of the ones that are decent are very expensive for what they are offering. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to pick a hall? am i running out of time? Here are some of my picks so far... --Westbury Manor... very cute, but not as posh and glamourous as i had always imagined. but i like the outdoor area. --Villa lombardi... my mom luvs it there(says the food is great), the price was the lowest out of all the ones i am considering. overall good package. I liked the big cocktail room. Place was big and pretty. But i dont like the 'fake villa' environment... everything is pretty and clean and new, but seems somehow manufactured. --Glen Island Harbour Club... this is the latest one i visited. My fiance and i luved the water and the boats... inside was ok--nice clean very pretty... but not glamourous either. We dont know anything about the food or the service. The price was a little bit higher than the rest. But so far we really liked this one. --Tavern on the green... this one is more my style.. i luv the city, luv that we are in central park. The room is ok, everything is luxurious. Pricetag not sooo bad. but food seems to be kinda minimal and i heard that it was really bad (from a friend and from restaurant reviews on the internet). Nothing was tacky. --Flowerfield... my fiance luved this one. The cocktail room is nice, luved the bridal suite and the grooms lounge. However it is way out of the way and hard to get to. Nothing there seems very expensive or luxurious. Price to me seems way high for the quality of the room and the location. --Harrison house at glen cove--- seemed to be nice --- had the high class look i was going for. Price is high and i am worried about the food and the service. --Oheka Castle=== my favorite of course! Should i just beg my parents and suck up the big cost? is a wedding really worth all this money? Is there anything out there that is better?
Please help... i am so confused and this is making my engagement period sooo stressful. Thanx for those of you who read this long post.

FH went to school at USMMA and i'm also a former Navy officer (he's still in) so we went with the school which has both the chapel and hall. made it easy, and we weren't bent on having where we live, in VA, or at another military location.

I was between Lands End, Carltun and Carlyle. I really wanted windows in the ballroom and no carpeting....
When I went into Carlyle I just picured myself in my gown dancing in the ballroom! It's history from there!

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
i only looked at hemlet willow creek. the price was awesome and i am able to have it on a saturday night like i wanted.
the matre'd barbara was super experienced and either is psychic or read me like a book b/c her ideas were just what i pictured, including her style which is no b/s. it also didnt hurt she did Kissingers daughters wedding and queer eye lighting guy wedding and also one of my super well to do clients wedding - all at different halls.
after meeting her i decided i loved the package and i wanted that place. i did not look further.

For me, the second we pulled up at East Wind, I knew I wanted my wedding there but didn't know if we could afford it...We were flexible on the date, so now we can have the wedding of our dreams and we got a great price!!! The place is magical..When you pull up, its like'WOW'!!!!! The food is awesome and the grounds are so well-manicured!!! I saw many other halls and non compared to East Wind!!

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
Ok another question: how far away is giorgio's from queens?
Funny story about the carlyle... i tried to go visit there with my fiance, it was about our 4th catering hall for the day. when we drove in, the security guard started yelling to us that we could not park in front b/c it was a state park and we needed to park in the public lots. My fiance did not feel like walking and he was agitated at the guard, so we left without even seeing the place. oh well :)
I think that even with all your fabulous advice and help i still wont be able to settle on a place. i am a huge procrastinator and my lil brain refuses to make a decision until the last possible minute. my sick lil brain also decides that it likes the most expensive place and then nothing else will do even though she cant afford it and then I end up with nothing! oh well, i am very disheartened.

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
reading your post - i noticed that you said that you guys liked the Glen Harbor Club but it was not glamorous enough
have you looked at the Huntington Harbor Club - not many girls here are getting married there - but i am and i alove it - on the water - one wedding at a time and the inside has been redone and it is glamorous ----
one of my favorite parts is both the cocktail and the reception hall room have a whole wall of windows so you can see the whole view of the water------ plus if the weather is nice the cocktail hour can be outside
here are some pics since alot of people have never been there - it may give you an idea if you like the place or not
I just wanted to update everyone on my search progress. Thank you to all who have made suggestions and responded.
Today i visited two halls... the first was glen island harbor club (2nd visit)... we liked it there alot.. we luv the water... we even imagined having a fireworks display (i dont know if that is even possible) or driving in on a boat. We liked the cocktail hour room alot, it had great views of the water. The reception room was ok --- nice size, great color, but nothing special. Everything was very new and well kept. The price quoted was not the greatest (a lil on the high end). Basically the guy said that since he only has one spot left sat in june, he is not very negotiable. he has no reason to be. The place seemed to have everything well run and offered a lot of food.
Second place we went to was the Bourne Mansion. Thanx for the suggestion girls! We luved it there. The mansion was beautiful. It had the exact feeling we were going for. The cocktail rooms were great, and better yet the ballroom was gorgeous. The price was reasonable, although we are still hoping to negotiate a little, since they have a sight fee. The only negatives were that some aspects of the mansion were a little bit rundown, and it was hard to imagine what the grounds would look like in the middle of winter. We were also very worried about what the food would be like. My family is italian and all they care about is food and lots of it and my mom is very picky ( i dont blame her cuz she is a good cook so i trust her opinion). The more food there is the more they think you spent on the wedding. I was also worried that since they have only been around for about three years, they might not be as efficient as some of the other well known places. (I read on one of the other posts that it is better to pick something that has been around for longer.) I am also wondering about their service and if they are snooty or not. I dont want people who will treat us rudely. If anyone knows anything about their food and how good they actually are at running a wedding i would appreciate any information. Thank you guys so much for your help... i feel i am getting closer... today is the first day that i have actually enjoyed planning the wedding. My fiance even said that he does not mind going with me cuz he gets to spend the whole day with me. (he even gave up watching his basketball game today). Thanx again!!!!

Isn't Bourne part of Lessings? If so, you have nothing to worry about, Lessings has been around for quite some time and has quite a few different wedding locations on long island.

I wanted a place where it was one wedding at a time. That's why when I walked into North Ritz Club...I knew it was for me!!

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
We chose it because we also felt it when we walked in. Flowerfield gave us that 'wow' reaction. If you can picture having your wedding there that is your place

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
The last thing you should be worried about at the Bourne is the food! They are run by lessings which is one of the caterers on LI that's been around the longest! You definitely need to see it in the summer to understand how amazing it looks. And if you have concerns about something being 'rundown' then they take care of it. When we booked, we thought the ballroom needed painting...low and behold, it was painted. They really are constantly going above and beyond there. But then again, I'm bias.

hey girls,
i am now strongly considering the Bourne Mansion. I would appreciate any info on the place you girls can give me. Any advice on how to negotiate with Ben, and things i should definitely ask him to include? Thank you so much!

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
I love all the suggestions.
All I can add is that, I didn't get married at my first choice. Our hall was stricktly based on $$$ , as was everything else!
My advice would be not to pick a place based on $$ or what you think they can/can't do for you. YOU and Your hubby will make your wedding more memorable than you can imagine! I'm now married a year ++ and all of our family and some friends sill rave about our wedding when it comes up. (Mind you, this is coming from the girl who danced on the tables at her own wedding) Congratulations!!! I'm sure no matter where you pick, it will be the most incredible day and wedding for you guys!

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
hmmmmmm.....this is a tricky one because I'm totally biased to the Harrison House. I like the bourne mansion and thought it was beautiful but loved the regency feel of the harrison house. Like I pictured having dinner parties in the cocktail room then 'dinner is served' and entering into this massive reception. Plus, for us, there were so many out of town guests that we wanted a place that everyone could stay and not have to drive anywhere. On top of all of that, some of the best weddings we've been to are after parties! And the Harrison house has an entire pub located upstairs. It had everything we ever could've wanted.....

Re: Help!!! how did u pick a catering hall?
I just started to plan my wedding and it is very overwhelming and i cant believe how much prices vary depending on the day and time. I am hoping to book a june 2009 wedding on a Saturday night and hopefully I can stick to my budget I have narrowed it down to 3 Villa Lombardi's, East wind estates and terrace on the park any input?:?
