HELP-How do you choose a reception site?

HELP-How do you choose a reception site?

I am so confused. I have been engaged for 2 months, but have been out of the country. I'm back now and need to start planning asap! We want to have our wedding in Fall '06, but have no idea how you even begin to decide on a date and then pick a reception site...
We are thinking of having a more urban wedding cause my sis is having her wedding on the water in LI. Anyone have any advice on great reception sites (out of the ordinary) they have seen in NYC, Brooklyn or Queens? We are probably having 150 people max., and are looking to spend around $100-$150. Is that even possible in NYC in October? We love River Cafe, but have heard its a bit pricey...

Any help would be great, I'm lost!

Thanks!

Just go check around different places and see what styles you like. I'm not sure if $100-150 is what they ask for in NYC. I know I went to check out a few places in Manhatten and it was a little higher, most of them started at $ 180. FM me if you have any questions though.

The River Cafe is really nice, if you like that scene did you try WATERSEDGE in Long Island City?? It has the same kinda view!

I don't have any help for you for NYC or Queens or anything not on LI, but I had to give general advice:

-Find out what things you definitely want in a hall: waterviews, loft location, country club setting, no site fee, only one wedding at a time, etc. Once you've narrowed down the list, make appointments and visit these places.

-When you call to make appointments or to attend the showcases, see how the staff treats you. One new hall out by my house was crossed off of my list after I couldn't get in touch with the BM, after leaving her three messages (she apparently doesn't work Mondays and Tuesdays) and never being called back!

-When you visit the places, walk around, imagine the photo ops., see how the colors and room style make you feel, visit the bathrooms, request copies of the menu and talk pricing.

And I just had to mention that your ring is gorgeous!

I saw about 38 places in NYC. Most of them with the exception of three ask for at least 185 pp. Lofts are another choice but the site fees + catering fee can put you over the top. Its hard to find a place in NYC with outdoors , views and a good price.

I used a place that offers help with your site selection and its free

The halls pay their fees. Give them a call they even set the appt up for you. I worked with Mimi.

I went to a wedding at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC and it was gorgeous. I don't know what they charge though.

Wedding Sites & Services Magazine is a good place to start. They give price ranges, capacity, sample menus and one photo per location. The New York edition covers all NYC and LI as well as Westchester. It is available at Borders.

There is a restaurant Sweetwaters that overlooks the Brooklyn Bridge, I hear it is very nice.
Tavern on the Green starts at $100pp. Don't know the details.
Trat Dopo Theatro... I love it there!!! The food is so good. I wanted to have our reception there but FH didn't want ppl to travel...I think they may be a vendor here as well.
