help.. how do you get a 'number' from your parents? Long...

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend.

So in the midst of beginning wedding planning, I have been having a hard time with numbers... I sat down with my parents to talk to them about contributing to our wedding. My parents are more than willing to help us, although they aren't going to pay for the whole thing. The thing is, I asked them how much they thought they would be willing to help out with, and they keep telling me that they can't come up with a specific number. I find this hard because without knowing how much they can help, it's hard for us to create a budget and shop around.

Another issue is that my parents keep comparing me to my sister, who just got married last May. The thing is that she lives upstate where everything is A LOT cheaper, and she was engaged for 5 years, 3 of which she lived with her husband's mom so they could save money for a house. Also, her mother in law paid for a large share of the wedding. I keep telling my parents that our situations aren't the same, that we have been on our own for 5 years without the financial support from anyone, we are getting married on LI and his parents aren't helping us.

My dad also loves to lecture me on money. He is retired and him and my mom are very comfortable, but not without a rough past.. they have had their share of money issues and he lectures me every chance he gets. I mean we are not very stable financially either, which doesn't make it any easier. Every time I talk to him I hang up the phone feeling like I am never going to get married because we 'can't afford it'.

Maybe I am just venting, but I don't really know what to do. We are going to see the North Ritz (if my FH ever gets home from work). I guess I will just call them and tell them what they have quoted us, and see if they can put down a deposit where ever we decide to book.

Thanks for letting me vent!

ask them how much they'd be able to help you out with the wedding ... but don't pressure them to give anything, if they don't want to.

Well if they said they would help out tell them that you want to start looking at halls and if they can give you a budget or a number they were looking to be in so that you can narrow down the places to look at.

Ugh. I am having a REALLY similar issue with FILs. They offered to help and first said they'd give us as much as they were giving FSIL for her wedding, but she was getting married upstate and it was going to cost a LOT less. She ended up cancelling her black tie affair and getting married at a local restaurant which cost about $1000.

Now FH's parents won't stick to that (her wedding hallw as going to be avout $10K, so we fgured we could count on at least that much) and are similarly being vague. We have asked them numerous times for a number and they will not give it.

What we plan to do is provide them with a list of things and ask them to pay for specific thing rather than asking for a number, which we'll obviously never get. Maybe hat could work for you?

i woud make a budget based on what you can afford. That way wat ever you parents cotribute is icing on the cake.

I would take your parents. or just one of them - on a couple of appointments to visit reception halls. let her get a feel for how much things cost. See what they say after that.

Maybe even get a few quotes from major vendors just to get an idea with that too. I thought I was crazy spending what I am with my hall, but then when I did the math I'm spending about $15,000 just in vendors - when I originally did my budget I didn't expect that.

ITA!!! ... I have the same issue except mines a little more difficult lol.. my sister is getting married 3 months after me so they have 2 weddings to save for and its not like they have a bank full of money that they have been saving since i was a little girl... my engagement is long so i was basically told whatever they could manage to save as a 'gift' from the time i got engaged until my wedding is what they can contribute... so we decided to have the 2 1/2 yr engagement and just SAVE SAVE SAVE our butts off!!!! so while i know when it comes to crunch time i will prob need there money for final payments and such but until then im pretending that they aren't giving a thing to motivate us to save as much as possible....
so my advice to u would also be to do it alone and whatever they end up giving u will be extra money! hope that helped

If they won't give you numbers, I would try suggesting giving them general things to pay for. Ask them if they would like to pay for limos or photography or flowers...whatever it comes out to be, they can take care of it

i agree with this method... i didnt know how much my parents (or FH's) were going to give us as a gift... im the last of 3 kids, so i asked my siblings how much they gave them, assuming we would be getting the same amount. (even though theres a huge gap between us all, and HELLO inflation!!!!) My mom held off on giving me an actual number for a few months. Until the day we booked our photog/video. FH's mom and step dad offered to pay for our florist. So, i asked my mother if she wouldnt mind, instead of giving us a gift, if she could cover our photog/video. she agreed and thats when the number was given.

So maybe approach it like that. Ask them if they wouldnt mind, to pay for some vendors...
and i feel it helps us out financially this way becuase we dont have to make these vendor payments along the way.

good luck!!!
