Bat Mitzvahs can definitely be as fancy as weddings. Do you have a pants/skirt suit that you can jazz up - to look more appropriate for a party. The mother will probably be in a fancy dress/gown - so you can take it from there.
As far as a gift - are you close with your collegue?

Crashing the '06 board, but I went to my boss's son's Bar Mitzvah and it was fancier than I could ever hope our wedding to be. It was an afternoon also and wore a dress, but a lot of the kid's mothers wore nice suits. We gave the same amount as you would give for a wedding, in our case $300.

Yes. He is literally my only friend here and I want to give an appropriate gift... so I guess just the same for a wedding?

I think I need a new dress (ok, this is just me wanting to shop and justifying it).

we went to my cousin's in January & it was the first ever for me...It was just like a wedding. I wore a nice pants suit with a fancy shirt under my jacket.

We ended up giving him 350..I would say anything over $250 would be appropriate

Maybe we can have a GTG Bat Mitzvah for you
and we'll give out string cheese as favors

I already had one! I made $6K in one night 22 years ago. NOT TOO SHABBY! It payed for a week of college!

I thought that Bat Mitzvah gifs were supposed to be a little less than wedding gifts. Like, if you would give $350 for a wedding, make it $200 for a bat mitzvah. I guess I was wrong. I have not been to a Bat Mitzvah for years.

So, you know how they make those custom labels for water bottles for the OOT bags? I think I want to see custom labels for cans of string cheese.

a nice suit or dress is fine.
for sunday at 3, even a nicer sundress is fine.
if you are going to the ceremony, make sure your shoulders are covered...

as for a present, for jews the number 18 has special significance, (chai), meaning life (think fiddler on the roof l'chaiim- to life)
so a money gift in a multiple of 18 would be very appropriate. i've given barnes and noble gift certificates (if you're not comfortable giving cash)...

We went to FH's cousin's bat mitzvah in June, and I wore a black dress with a shawl. I can't remember what we gave, because FH was in charge of that. I know he bought a gift, and then the day of realized his faux pas. But by then it was too late.

The party was also on a Sunday afternoon. A lot of the adults were in what I would call 'casual wedding' attire. Meaning nice suits and 'night out to dinner' dresses. But we realized that his uncle probably spent more on his cousin's bat mitzvah then we will be spending at our wedding!!! (Then again, there was more people!!)
