For grad school apps. Has anyone ever had to do this? Can you give me soem insights on how to do this, what to include, what not to include, and what they're REALLY asking?
Thanks.

Re: Help! I have to write an autobiography!
I basically started off w/ my school career...fave subjects in HS & how although I wasn't a very strong student in HS, when I went to college later on down the road it was b/c I wanted to go & I've been a straight A student ever since. When I got into grad school for teaching I listed how I wanted to be a teacher since I was in 5th grade but followed another path & now see how I was meant to be a teacher, blah blah.
I think they want to know your school accomplishments (any awards, honors in school), any work pertaining to whatever your masters will be in. I think they also want to know why you would be a good match to their school. What makes you more qualified/dedicated to be in their school than the next person.

Re: Help! I have to write an autobiography!
Thanks. So more of my academic life than an autobiography? When I was really thinking of going for teaching, I knew what to write, because I wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid, teaching my dolls the alphabet, but through college, I've changed my mind. Maybe I can write about that transition i guess. The whole 'autobiography' throws me. 'I was born on a sunny spring day....' LOL

Yea, I know what you are saying. I mean I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to share your interests and that you are engaged, etc. It shows you are a rounded person.
Good luck.

I have a really good format for this. I would have to do some serious digging to find it though.

Re: Help! I have to write an autobiography!
When I applied to grad school, it was a personal statement that I wrote. It was for a PhD program, so I wrote about my academic interests (specific fields in neuroscience) and how I came about on this path in my life (i.e. originally wanted to be an occupational therapist so I took a few neuroscience courses...had one influential research course, etc). Future goals are always good to write about as well.
