Help, I need a location that isn't the usual catering hall!

Help, I need a location that isn't the usual catering hall!

I'm newly engaged (only a week) and completely overwhelmed! I definitely know that i DON'T want the usual 'wedding factory' type of place that everyone has their weddings at. I want something unique and different, someplace where we can just throw a big celebration and not worry about the traditional stuff. Don't get me wrong, i'm still a sucker for the romantic part of it and i'll be in a beautiful dress with bridesmaids and all that. I just want a location that will be fun and something different that will help everyone remember. Something on the water? A castle? A mansion? AAAhhhh!! I need some guidance please. Any help on where to look will be greatly appreciated.
I guess the 'when' will depend on the 'where' also.
Thanks!

Wow - the responses are great - thanks so much and keep 'em coming! btw - Nassau is preferable i think (i live in RVC).

Congrats! How many people are you having. I think the Metropolitan is beautiful. One event at a time, food is wonderful and I don't think it looks like your 'average wedding hall'.

Can you be any more specific?
Nassau or Suffolk?
Is it ok to have more than one wedding at a time?
Am or PM?
WHat is the most per person you can spend?

These things will help us narrow it down for you.

The Riverhead Aquarium does weddings. It is so beautiful there. I would check it out. And the winter is the cheapest time to get married there.

For a more elegant Mansion feel you can try the Woodlands.
One wedding at a time and definatly not the usual catering halll feel.
Good Luck.

Congrats!

My FH and I are pretty untraditional, so we wanted something 'different' too.

We are having our ceremony at the Fire Island Lighthouse and the reception at the Snapper Inn.

How about Oheka Castle? That is where we got married. Or you could try a winery. www.macariwines.com does weddings. There is also Harrison House and Deseversky. They are both mansions.

Congratulations! Choosing a place is the hardest part - I still haven't decided. Take your time and look at each place. Everyone says you will know it when you find it.

I adore mansions. Try the Vanderbilt Mansion @ Dowling College. Or the Bourne Mansion. They are both so beautiful.

Hey! Congrats!

We felt the same exact way as you do....in fact we had started looking in Vermont just to avoid the typical wedding. You should really check out Timberpoint. in Great River..its an old mansion, on a golf course, overlooking the great south bay. Theres also a lot you can do with your wedding to make it non-traditional. Like we are having a cocktail reception where its not a formal sit down dinner and telling the band not to slow down (people will eat when they want to). As someone also recommended, the Riviera in Massapeaqa is also not your typical long island catering hall. Both Timberpt and Riviera are also very reasonably priced.

Anyway, you can also do a wedding on one of the vinyards or something different like that...dont stress its definitely possible to avoid the long island wedding factory!

Take a look at the Stewart Manor Country Club. (www.stewartmanor.com) 1 wedding at a time. DH and I loved the 'country home' feeling when we walked in the door. Great food, great price.

FM if you need any more info.

Good luck,
Donna

a second vote for the vanderbilt mansion... it is absolutely beautiful there, especially in the spring and summer...

You should go to Borders Book Store and buy NY & LI wedding location magazines. They were very helpful when I was looking for a place. In addition to the catering halls, they list the yachts penthouse's in NYC, etc as venues. very interesting stuff!

Of course it depends on your budget but I would definitely recommend Oheka Castle, maybe Coindre Hall, a Vineyard (though most are out east), or maybe even the Crescent Beach Club - on the beach, one wedding at a time.

Have you considered a destination wedding in the carribean?

I wantes something different too, and wound up with Carlyle on the Green... it's not the usual 'Wedding Factory' with only one wedding at a time.

I loved the ballroom from the moment I stepped- actually the enterence, drive through the park was really the first thing i loved... it wasn't somewhere right on Jericho Tpke.... It is like taken away from the hustle and bustle...

I'm getting married at The Snapper Inn to and I think it's beautiful. It is in Suffolk but it's an open air pavillion, good prices, right on the water. You can even pull up in a boat. thesnapperinn.com. You have to click on rooms for weddings to see pics. I also have some in my bio on theknot.com. (melijane)
