We met with our rabbi and asked if the coupled getting married customarily makes a donation. He said yes, but didn't want to tell us a number. So -- what is a good amount to donate to the temple? Maybe let me know what you are 'donating' to the temple or church or to your officiant so I have an idea of what it should be. TIA!

Re: Help me figure out the donation amount!
We are being charged $500 for the church plus a $100 late fee that will be refunded if we begin the mass on time.

Our church donation (which is more required) is $600. We will also give our priest something as a thank you.

Are you getting married at a temple? It all varies depending on where you're getting married.
If you get married at a temple you will have to pay for the rabbi/cantor's services, regardless of whether you actually use them. This is considered your donation.
If you are getting married somewhere else, but a rabbi/cantor, then you usually pay them a fee.
You also usually sponsor the kiddush during your Auf Ruf.
I can go on and on, but it'd be easier if you just told me where you were getting married.

We are getting married at a temple but there are no fees (FH's parents are members so I everything is apparently getting waived). The rabbi specifically told us there is no fee for him, but most couples make a donation to the temple in lieu of all of those fees that others usually pay. FH's parents are already handling the Auf Ruf because it is their home temple.

Re: Help me figure out the donation amount!
Since your FH's parents are members they probably pay a few thousand dollars a year, depending on the temple, i know the one by me is 5k a year to join. So with that being said that is why they are waiving all the fee's they charge to non members.
I would give what you can, 100 or so because i am sure his parents donate throughout the year if they are members
