Hi ladies!!! I have been soooooo busy in med school so I haven't had a chance to breathe let alone check out LIW but school is great. Very very very tiring but so interesting and a lot of fun.
So as a lot of you may already know, FH and I had always planned on going to Disney for our HM. ALWAYS. We absolutely love it there and couldn't wait to go. But we were talking the other day and since my only true summer break during my four yrs of med school is between my first and second year (hence why the wedding is then) and we can go to Disney really any time, especially since I'm in Ft Lauderdale now at school, and so this is where we will be living, when else will we have the opportunity to go abroad during school? Then when med school is over, we need to talk about starting a family and I need to start my residency, so there won't be any time for much hardcore traveling. So we have decided to put off Disney for a few months (and almost definitely we will go for our one year anniversary) and we have decided to go somewhere exotic. We wanted a combination of history, romance, beautiful scenery and beaches, and pure bliss so what is more ideal for that than GREECE?!?!? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am sooo excited!!!!
Any info that can be given would be SOOO much appreciated!! I am so freaking busy with school work so it is going to be tough planning this trip since neither FH nor I has ever been there... so anything would be a big help!! TIA ladies and I will check back as often as possible!!!

We are flying. We were thinking we would probably fly into Athens and spend a couple nights there... then we definitely want to go to Mykonos, Santorini and Crete... but we are very open to opinions/suggestions since we have never been there. Santorini looks sooo beautiful and I know a lot of people go to Mykonos and Crete and of course Athens.

u can island hop also. The island my parents are from is KOS..also known as the island of Hippocrates. Maybe you have some interest in going there since youre going to be a doctor lol.
from there u can island hop to about 12 diff islands.. and u can also go to TURKEY! (bodrum,turkey) which is also nice.

Wow Turkey - that is sick!! Thanks so much for the input!! How does the island hopping work? Like do you need to arrange that ahead of time? Or do you kind of just hop on boats while you are there? Also... would you recommend getting a travel agent or is it possible to do this on my own? Only problem is I don't know of any reputable agencies down here in FL bc I just moved and all the people I know aren't from around here bc they all moved to start med school, too. And I won't be going home to LI much so I prob couldn't use an agency up there. Not sure what to do.
We went to Greece 2 years ago.. We spent 1 night in Athens. We got there at 9 AM, did our sightseeing and the next day we took a 6 AM ferry to Mykonos. One night in Athens was PERFECT. We did Mykonos and Santorini. Even though people refer to Mykonos as a party island, I would still recommend it to honeymooners. Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach are party beaches and I would avoid them on a honeymoon. We went to Platis Yialos beach every day and it was beautiful. I also hear Psarou Beach is nice but we didn't try it. I would stay in Mykonos town and take the bus to the beach during the day (or rent a car and drive). The reason I wouldn't stay by the beach is because there are tons of restaurants and bars by the town and the buses stop running at a certain time at night and hence cabs become scarce. So we walked from our hotel at night to dinner and the bars. It was perfect.
As far as Santorini, we stayed in Fira. Some people would recommend Oia since it's quieter but if I had to honeymoon in Santorini, I would still do Fira. I don't like too much quiet.
Oh and we took ferries to each island. If i had to do it all over again, I would try to fly. They sometimes cancel the ferry if the water is too rough or switch from high speed to low speed and that would take FOREVER. Maybe Barb would have more input on this...

Well i am heading off to classes now (medical biochem first - what a joy) but I just wanted you Greek pros to know that we have decided on Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. I think we are going to skip Crete. We don't want to be traveling during our entire HM. We would like to have some time to relax and settle in to each of our hotels and not be packing up two days after we get to our new destination. I think we will do three nights in Athens (we are history nerds), three nights in Mykonos, and four-five nights in Santorini, depending on the travel arrangements. I am still trying to figure out when the high speed ferries run and if any are overnight. If anyone could also tell me how safe Greek airlines are, I'd appreciate it. So many people say it is ideal to fly from Athens to Mykonos but if Greek planes don't feel safe, I will die of a heart attack lol bc I already hate flying to begin with and I have only flown American carriers my entire life. So I don't want to be panicking while flying between islands on my HM. Thanks again, ladies!!!!!!

i def agree with barbara 2 days max in athens, and crete is supposed to be gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg i would def skip mykonos instead jmo, crete is seriously supposed to be awesome, thats next on my list.
as for the airlines i took one to xios and i felt fine, i mean theyre not HUGE so that may freak you out if your afraid of flying, why not take the ferry? i love taking the ferry its so pretty to just stand on deck

How long does it take to 'island hop' via ferry? For instance, how far away is Crete from Santorini? Are all the islands close to one another? I am not one to pack up and move constantly so I think we are going to limit ourselves to Crete and take day trips to other places such as Santorini.

I'm on my lunch break lol... So Crete is more beautiful and fun than Mykonos?? What are the pros and cons of each (if anyone has the will and time to list them lol)?
As far as I know, some ferry rides take as long as 8 hrs so that's why people often stay at various islands. Plus you get to see the most beautiful sunset in the world if you stay at Santorini . Can't stay - will post again later. Have a great day ladies!!
Ok to LaurenandMike, I really really really don't think you should spend 3 nights in Athens. You'd be taking away time from the beautiful islands. This website is awesome...

Creat a user name and password and you'll get lots of advice on the forums. Like I said, I did 1 night in Athens. We were there for less than 24 hours and climbed the Acropolis and Parthenon. I don't really know what else you'd do there that would require 3 nights.
There are many groups of islands. Mykonos and Santorini are close to each other and are part of the 'Cyclades' islands.
As far as checking ferry times and schedules, I booked my tickets in advance through this website.

I also picked up the tickets from their travel office in Athens. (There are several options on how to get your tickets).
I haven't been to Crete but like I said Mykonos was beautiful. If you join tripadvisor.com you can research which one is better for a honeymoon. HTH!
