I don't know about the teddy bear but I've kept mine both in the fridge and the cabinets with no problem. I think the trick is to make sure the container is really tightly sealed. When I first had my own kitchen mine hardened, and I think it's because I just had it in a bag clipped shut. Microwaving it helped loosen it up. HTH.

Re: Help! My Brown Sugar is Like Cement!!
I have a teddy bear thing too. But I keep it in the box/bag- clip it and put it into a Ziplock bag and never have a problem.

Here you go....
How do I soften Brown Sugar? When brown sugar hardens, it loses its natural moisture. Here are some suggestions to restore the moisture and soften the sugar: If you need to use hard brown sugar immediately, remove it from the package and heat it in a 250-degree oven. Watch it carefully. As soon as it’s soft, measure the amount you need right away because it will again harden as it cools. Please use caution. Oven heated sugar is very hot!
To soften brown sugar in a microwave, place it in a microwave-safe container, cover loosely with a wet (but not dripping) white paper towel, set the microwave on high, and check the sugar every 30 seconds. Again, microwave-softened sugar hardens as it cools so microwave only the amount of sugar you need. And it’s very hot. Please use caution.
Time permitting, place the hardened brown sugar in a rustproof container with a dampened – not dripping wet – white paper towel or napkin placed over a small piece of plastic wrap or foil on top of the sugar. Cover tightly. Remove the paper towel after the sugar absorbs the moisture and softens (about two days) and tightly reseal the container.

Re: Help! My Brown Sugar is Like Cement!!
i microwave it for a few seconds with an apple slice. that always does the trick. i have heard to leave an apple slice in the bag with it - but the thought of an apple slice just hanging out in the brown sugar kinda grosses me out!

Re: Help! My Brown Sugar is Like Cement!!
Very Interesting Post. I just threw a box out on Tuesday night because it was rock hard. I had no clue I could salvage it. I just figured I hadn't wrapped it tight enough.
What is this teddy bear you talk of?

I don't know how to make an old hard box soft again but when I buy a new box I put a piece of bread in it and it stays soft

They sell these little ceramic things (teddy bears, disks, etc) that you soak in water for 10 minutes, then put it in your brown sugar container. The moisture keeps the brown sugar from getting hard. They really work!

Its a little terracotta bear that you moisten and put in the bag of brown sugar. It helps keep it from getting hard. A friend of mine gave me mine, but I think you can find it in BBB or LNT.

I have to look for this teddy bear next time I am in BBB that way I hopefully won't have to keep throwing away my brown sugar! Thanks.
