So I have never been to a Bat Mitzvah, ever!! And next week I will be going to my former boss' daughter's Bat Mitzvah. Besides it being weird because the big boss who laid me off wil be there, what do I get this girl? I know I should just give money and be done with it. But part of me was thinking of something silver from Tiffany's.
They're very pretty, but honestly most people give checks not physical presents for bar/bat mitzvahs.

Really? I never knew that. I knew some people gave money but I thought gifts were common too.

I would be careful w/ the Tiffany necklace - if there's something she wants from there, she probably already told a family member. From what I've witnessed w/ my friends, close family members give jewelry AND money. She may already be getting one or more of those necklaces!!! Tiffany jewelry is a very popular gift, but I would stick w/ a check.

Give money and it should be in multiples of 18.

I actually got the Tiffany heart necklace for my Bat Mitzvah and it was a wonderful gift!!!
ETA: I didn't have any tiffany jewelry before that...nor have I gotten any since. It sounds like these little girls today are much more jewelry-conscious than I was back then!

Money CAN be given in multiples of 18 but there are no rules that say you have to.

I don't think the Tiffany thing is a bad idea, although maybe a gift certificate would be better if you don't want to give a check...

Re: Help needed with a Bat Mitzvah gift
i have the heart necklace- fh gave it to me for our 3 year dating anniversary and i LOVE it! however i do agree with the money thing- most couples give $100-200. For my boss's daughter i gave $250.

I don't know f this was mentioned, but how about a savings bond? I always feel weird giving cash, and somehow less awkward with a savings bond, plus it is a good investment and will double in value

I was told that the number 18 had some signifigance and that is why people give in multiples of 18 ...however, I could be wrong.

18 is Chai, which means good luck. Many people do give gifts in multiples of 18. Most of my friends at my Bat Mitzvah gave me $36.

That's what I was going to say. I feel that especailly with girls that are so brand name conscous that they might not save any gift money. I don't know this family, but mayeb her family would jsut let her spend it on a LV bag or something.
Or if you just want her to have something fun you could give cash. I also like the Tiffany's gift card idea too.
I do really like the second necklace though.

How long does a savings bond take to mature? We have to remember that the girl is 13, not a young child.
I haven't rec'd any savings bonds since my baptism.

The yield on saving bonds are based on treasuries and depending on what they are yielding that is how long it takes a saving bond to mature and the yield (return) is not that good right now. Plus, when redeemed, the interest has taxes due on it unless used for very specific purposes.

Re: Help needed with a Bat Mitzvah gift
I got the Tiffany heart necklace for my Bat Mitsvah and LOVED it! Remember, most of the gifts ARE checks/cash, and they go straight away to an account, or to pay off the big party, so the girl/boy usually doesn't get to see it unless her/his parents put it into an account, and even then, it takes another 5 or so years to access the bonds, or money. Personally, I LOVED the few physical gifts I received for my bat mitsvah!! We just went to a bat mitsvah where the parents said on the invitation that the daughter only wanted donations to some Israeli organization. I know the child, and the parents, and I KNEW the decision to donate was the parents and had nothing to do with the girl, so we gave her a really nice gift instead.

I got bonds from DH's aunt and uncle for our engagement and wedding. I'm afraid I will lose them before they mature. They're really a pain--I'm more a 'bird in the hand' type of person...

Re: Help needed with a Bat Mitzvah gift
Well, from what I know of the girl, she isn't really label crazed yet. The bat mitzvah will be a luncheon and not crazy expensive at all. I was thinking of getting her one of the Tiffany necklaces in her initial or maybe a bracelet. I am guessing that if she gets a dupe, she can return it for something else. From what her dad (my former boss) said, she was excited about getting gifts.
