I got our LIPA bill yesterday, and it said $620! We did have the central air on all day and night for about 2 and a half to 3 weeks. Does it come out this much for other people here who use central air? I just want to cry.
I did call up about it, and they said it is right! So does this sound right?

Might be - I know my mom said that her LIPA bill was over 600 this month too.

It just shocks me. Last month when I didn't use any central air at all, it was $110. So it adds over $500 to use central air? I'm never using it again this entire summer.

My ILs have 3 refrigerators (one holds drinks, one holds leftovers, one holds???) and in the summer, they pay over $1k some times.

are you on budget billing? You should look into that. Our LIPA bill is under $100 for our Town House every month, but we shut it off every day when we leave for work.
Definitely work on conserving. Try to look into an automatic thermostat and keeping your house temp at the highest you would be comfortable (72 degrees, maybe).
If no one will be home for awhile, try to get in the habit of turning off the air. Try to close closet doors and basement doors so you're not cooling closets and basements (assuming you're not down there). Also, we closed the vents to the basement since we don't use it (for now). Try to go around the house and close any vents in rooms you don't use. No sense in cooling rooms you're not in!
HTH! I'm sorry you got hit with that bill... it's sickening - especially when you find out it's not a mistake. DEFINITELY look into budget billing so you know what to expect each month.

OMG - Thats terrible! I used to pay about $200 in the summer with the air on for a very very small 2 bedroom apartment.

I am on budget billing and pay $91/month. My bill went up for July and Aug to $104 but I am still ahead as per my last statement. We have a 3 bedroom ranch.

The budget billing catches up from time to time and you suddenly have to pay the difference between the budget amount and your real usage. Could that be the issue?

We are not on budget billing yet. We moved into the house in December. I am going to ask them to test the meter just to make sure. I was expecting a bill in the 300s, but 600s? I was keeping the temp. at 72, and that's really not that low.

I never keep the air on during the day. I only have the Central Air on when we're home and when we are not - it goes right off. Lowering it at bed time helps too.
