help preventing cats from scratching new couches?

Help me....I am about to purchase new couches and my cats are going to ruin them like the ruined my old one. Is there anything I can do or put on them to make sure this doesnt happen?

the only suggestion I have is to purchase a small water gun and spray them everytime they go near the coach and about to scratch

I heard that if you put duct tape on the side, the cats don'w like how it feels and they won't go near it. Do you have a scratching post? that should alleviate some of their scratching. Thankfully, my chloe doesn't scratch the furniture.

You can buy this in Petco- it's a thick, double-sided tape- it's sticky on BOTH sides and the cats don't like the way it feels.

It's clear so it's not so obvious that you have tape on your couch!

We use it and it works well

Try softpaws, they have saved my furniture! You glue them on the cats claws ( just the claw), they are pieces of plastic/rubber that let the cat sstill make the motion of clawing, but since it is a blunt end, they can't do any/as much harm.

I've heard that every time they scratch the couch, yoiu are supposed to pick them up and place them on the scratching post...to teach them that they need to scratch the post and not the couch.

thankfully, our cats don't scratch the couches

This is what we are doing with our kittens, except its the mattress not the sofa.... after a few days it worked and only once in a blue moon does he goes to the mattress in the morning and while looking at me and does it... I think he is testing me I just say no and he goes right back to the post.

My sister tried these for her cat, and she couldn't even get them on her! I agree that everytime they scratch, show them the post. Chloe goes over to the post and scratches like a madwoman for like 5 minutes, then she sits on it. it's histerical, but she doesn't claw the furniture!

I heard about microfiber couches also. Thats what my mom is going to be doing sometime soon. With four cats you can imagine how our coaches look like!

Luckily our cat scratches the rug and not the couch, but the rug needs to be replaced anyway!!

We bought this spray at Petco, I think it's called Feliway. It's good for controlling the cat for scratching, and we also find it to work well when putting the cat in the carrier as she HATES it!! The spray tends to calm her down.

I know it can be used for scratching behaviours, also. It's a little pricey (I think I paid $30) but well worth it!!

Hartz makes a spray called Stay Off training Aid. It is reasonably priced and available at Walmarts and other places that carry Hartz brand pet products. It works very well. I had the same problem with my 4 kitties. They were sofa scratches too. The only thing is you must be consistent and spray often (every day) for a long while until they forget about it. I have never had a problem with staining. The only problem I had was that they chose the molding next. I have an 8 foot scratch post mind you, but I have to be vigilant!

Your best bet is double stick tape!!

GOOD LUCK!

We had the same problem.
We bought a Microfiber couch.

We've had it for about 1 year now, they don't really scratch at it, they just stretch on it. So there are little pulls on the corners.

But definately not as severe as our old couch. They destroyed that one down to the stuffing & wood!

Don't buy a cloth couch!

They def. work on the cat. We have one friend that can't stop playing with them when he's over though....like playing with scotch tape - weird.
