Help! Question about changing child's last name.

When our daughter was born two yearas ago, FH & I decided to give hyphenate mylastname-hislastname. Now that we're getting married & I'm taking FH's name we want to change Kayleigh's last name too. Does anyone know how I would go about doing this? I have no idea where to even start. How difficult is it going to be?

A lawyer can help you out.

Duh - reread the post.

Just call a family attorney. S/he can help you out. It shouldn't be too difficult since he is the father.

My sister did this a few years back. I don't know the details but I just wanted to remind you to remember to change the baby's name with social security also after the name change is complete.

In my opinion, this is one area where I say that you're not a fool to be your own lawyer! And, you can save yourself some money in the meantime. I know that lawyers usually charge a few hundred dollars for this (in addition to the filing fees).

Just call the Clerk's Office in your county and request the form. You fill it out and pay the filing fee. A date is set before a judge. You publish the name change in a few newspapers (I do not know if this is the case with a minor child SO check). You appear before the judge and tell the judge why you want to change the name. (It's just routine and your simple explanation will be enough). The judge grants the request and issues an Order changing her name.

P.S. get 5 or 6 copies of the 'original' order even if you have to pay extra for them. You will be surprised as to how many agencies ask for the original and it is always good to have extra.

Good Luck.
