help - ring appraisal and insurance

I need to get my ring appraised. I live on the Nassau/Suffolk line. Anyone have any recommendations? Is there anything I should know about getting my ring appraised and insuring it?

Thanks :)

my ring came from zales. and it came with an appraisal already. So I just took that to Allstate were we already have our car and renters insurance, so the put a rider on our renters insurance and it costs about 200 dollars a year.

When FH bought my ring, the jewler gave him the appraisal with it...can you go back to your jeweler? That might be the easiest.

My ring is inured under my parent's homeowner's insurance. It was easy, we just faxed the appraisal, they gave us a rate, and that was that. FH and I both rent (w/o renters insurance which is stupid of us.) Once we find out place, I'll move it over to our renter's or homeowner's....

I got my ring appraised at Gem Evaluation Lab in the EAB plaza. It only takes about 1/2 hour to an hour. They do the evaluation right in front of you. Once I got my ring appraised I insured through State Farm we just added it to out renters insurance policy. www.gemevaluation.com/

Same thing with us - the jeweler gave my FH the appraisal with the ring. We then added it as a rider to our homeowners insurance.

I work in a lousy neighborhood and would not put my ring on my finger until it is properly insured. I told FH that he could have used either his homeowner's or my renters insurance to insure my ring.

I had my e-ring appraised by Edward Lewand 516.429.2622. He's an independant that travels around to different jewelry stores, etc. He was very nice and answered all of our questions.

After I got back my appraisal, he also had a 2nd copy printed for me to send to my ins.co. I added to my homeowners policy and it made the policy double in price!!! We have a co-op right now, so it's not a full-blown house policy, but still

Just wanted to add that I just went to Gem Lab which is located in Manhattan if you are in the area and it's more convenient for you there.

Gem Lab

No appointments are necessary. They charge 1.5% of the retail value or $75 per karat - you pick whichever is the cheaper cost.

Definitely--they're on Old Country Road near the Willis Ave intersection. Deborah was fantastic. She gave us all the documentation we needed for the insurance company--Fh just attached the policy to our renters insurance.

I don't know about appraisals, but regarding insurance, make sure you find out for sure how much you're covered by the rider. I found out that the rider to my apartment insurance only covers up to a certain amount, which doesn't cover the entire cost of the ring, so I ended up getting a separate ring insurance.

LadyPrincess...I went to the same appraiser and she is awesome...

she used to work in Mineola on Old Country Rd. at the Jewelry Judge

she will give you an honest appraisal..it is better to get an appraisal done by an outside party so you know you got a quality diamond

I went to Marvin & Sons in Cedarhurst. They have appraised many items for me and my coworkers. My ring came with an appraisal but I wanted an independent one. Once we had this, we added the ring to our renter's insurance through Geico.
