help settle this 'when to send out the invites' discrepancy...

Here is the short version:

We are having a destination wedding in Italy, and a reception in NY when we get back. I am designing our NY reception invitations and need to know when is proper to send them out. My mom thinks I'm a week too early.

-- NY reception is October 2
-- FH and I and our families will be in Italy for the wedding at varying times between Sept 8 - 27, so responses MUST be back before we leave so we can do table seatings... for this reason, we guess the response date should be on or around August 25.

So... when should the invites go out?

Early July. The sooner the better. You'l have less worries that way.

I think around mid July (somtime between the 15th and 20th) is the time to do it. My invites went out 10 weeks before-we got married over Memorial Day weekend. We had the response date for a month before the wedding. We had some people that didn't respond-but you're going to get that no matter when you send them out. If you put your response date for August 25 that still gives you about 2 weeks before you leave to track down people that don't respond-which is more then enough time. I wouldn't do it too early, I think people are more likely to forget to respond if you give them too much time.

That sounds about right. 1 month before the rsvp date, and about 10 weeks before the wedding.
Normally, it should be 8 weeks befor ethe weddign, so 10 weeks gives you extra time, but isn't too early that people will forget.

I think about 6 weeks before the rsvp date. You have to figure for a week for them to arrive..you never know how long the mail will take...Then they will have have them about 4 weeks before the date
