HELP! We gave a check as a gift, and it was never cashed...

We gave someone a check for $125 for his Communion on May 1. (well, we gave the card to his Mom)

We just got a thank you card from her which simply said,

'That you for celebrating my first Communion. I'm glad you both came.'

We thought, 'what's with her? She didn't even thank us for the gift. She's not like that. '

I called the bank and my check was not cashed.

What should we do? I think she lost it and assumed we didn't gift a gift at all.

Call her thanking her for the card. Tell her that you were going over you bank account and you noticed the check was not charged. Tell her you were concerned and wanted to make sure it wasn't lost, etc....

im really bad about cashing checks it takes me forever... but since she didnt mention it in the thank you card, maybe you should ask...

I agree - Did you make it out to cash? If so you might want to cancel it if she doesnt have it.

sometimes it takes longer for people to cash a check for a communion or christening, etc. because they have to actually go down to a bank and open an account for the kids. (I work for a bank and it's kind of a pain to deposit checks that are made payable to a child) I gave a check for a christening in February and it took my cousin 3 months to cash it.

a check is good for 6 months. if you're not comfortable waiting, call up the mother and ask. if you made the check payable to the kid, or his/her mother it should be fine. a check made payable to 'cash' may be deposited by anyone. But if it's not cleared chances are she's still holding on to it, or it's lost.

i would call her and ask her. and tell her that you would be able to write another check.

Yes definitely. First, put stop payment on the original check, and then mail out the new one ASAP.

i absolutely agree. The mother would have mentioned the check even if she hadn't cashed it yet. She probably doesn't have it.

On another note, are you SURE you put it into the envelope? Is it possible you forgot or misplaced it yourself. You never know...

I'm absolutely sure.

So, if she did lose it, I have to put a stop pay on it and write a new one? The stop pay is $20 at my bank. We gave a little more than we could in the first place.

I WOULD GIVE A LITTLE MORE TIME..... i know sometimes i hold onto 3 paychecks at a time before i actually get to the bank....there is not enough hours in the day....give it another week or two then ask..MPO
