Re: HELP: what do you think of buying a house on a busy street???
Maybe you should look at co-ops or condo's. It may be a great way to get started and leave you the flexability to save some more money and still be able to have babies after you get married. You can look for a 2 or three bedroom which would give you some room to grow and you would save on a lot of bills that go along with maintaining a house.
Once you save up some more cash you may be able to start looking in a higher price range and it will give you some more options. Just an idea.

Re: HELP: what do you think of buying a house on a busy street???
My friend bought a house years ago on a busy street. Then she had children, when they were little they played in her big backyard, but now that they ride bikes she hates living there! They can't ride anywhere, so not only does she not like it they don't either (the kids). So I would say it would be ok for a starter home. My friend spent so much money on dormers and so fourth that now they don't want to move.

I would say don't do it. My FI and I saw a bunch of nice houses on busy streets. My dad who is a real estate developer and lawyer warned us against it for a number of reasons.
1. Kids and pets. You would not want to take a chance of having them run out into the street.
2. The house on a busy street won't appreciate in value as much as one that is not.
3. You have to be very careful backing out of your driveway each morning. This is especially true if the cars speed on the street or there is a blind spot.
4. Robberies tend to occur in locations where the robbers can get away quickly.
5. Noise pollution and regular littering. People throwing stuff on your lawn.
