Help - Wisdom Tooth

Help - Wisdom Tooth

I just found out today that i need one of my wisdom teeth out. It is decaying and is near toothache problems, so i am going to go next week to make an appt.

I was offered two ways to do it one by my dentist with just novacaine (scared of the pulling) or by an oral surgeon who will give me and IV sedative.

I am so scarred that i will have problems before my wedding and might even have issues at my wedding...but i know i have to get it out before hand or risk having a toothache the day of the wedding and/or honeymoon.

Can any of you ladies who have had this done share their experiences, what type of procedure they had and after effects...

I am so nervous and soooo upset about this....

Having a wisdom tooth out hurts.. I had all 4 of mine out. 2 at a time. I had IV both times. The last thing I wanted to hear was my teeth being ripped from my skull. I was sore for about a week afterwards. My face was swollen for about 2 weeks. But if you get them done now you should be fine for your wedding. I had mine out in March and my wedding was May 22... I was fine. Get it done and relax, once its over eat jello and take some pain killers and take a nap and you will get through it. Just think... for 2 weeks you can only eat soft food so you can loose some weight for the wedding.

I am scheduled to have this done on Saturday and they are just giving me the novecane and the gas. I am petrified also they are removing 2 wisdom teeth and one additional one.

I am not sure, but I think with me they are afraid to put me completely out because of my heart problems I am completely petrified!

i got 4 out 2 at a time (left side then right)...

the first set was a breeze, the second ones got infected and i have never been in such pain my entire life (sorry, the truth), BUT...it was only because they got infected and silly me didn't fill the prescription for the antibiotics (because i had NO PROBLEMS with the first set). recovery was a couple days and all was well...

ETA: i think i was 1/2 out, i can't remember...

I had a bad experience having 2 impacted teeth out at once; I had a lot of pain afterwards. But I was still fine within 10 days. You have plenty of time and if you can be put under I would do that.

I had one wisdom tooth pulled that was not impacted and while I felt fine the next day, it was a terrible experience, having the dentist yank and pull.

I have a consultation with an oral surgeon next week to have my last wisdom tooth out. It's impacted and it's going to suck! So I feel for you. It seems we're all in good company- we'll have to compare pain killers.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once. I got the IV and was OUT!!!! I wouldn't have done it any other way. I had a great experience, minor swelling. Sure, the pain was also minor. I was eating that night! However, I was given perscription narcotics...maybe that's why the pain wasn't bad . I had a lot of pain before and I too was terrifies beforehand. Everyone has a different experience. I would go for it, trust me, you'll be so happy when it's over.

Re: Help - Wisdom Tooth

this is my area!!!!
when i was younger i had trouble with my teeth not falling out, and my jaw being too small for all of my teeth....so i wound up getting 19 teeth pulled out total - 3 different surgeries.
I would go with the IV! Each time, they asked me if I wanted to be awake or alseep - ASLEEP please!
Is it scary? Yes
Does it hurt afterwards? A bit
Does it get better? so much better - takes a few days - but you'll be so glad you did it!

good luck!!!

I had the IntraVenous drugs & had almost no pain upon recovery. Just a slight ache the first day(the day of the actual surgery). I had 3 out at the same time & was reduced to baby food & jello, but that was just a precaution to mke sure the gum healed propoerly.

If you are OK with being fully sedated, I recommend that method.

Good Luck

Re: Help - Wisdom Tooth

I got 2 out last year, just using novacaine. I don't like being totally out, and I always feel kind of sick after so I avoid it. DEFINITELY GO TO AN ORAL SURGEON! My first tooth I had done by my dentist--it took 2 hours for 1 tooth, and I was so black and blue for 2 weeks, and swollen like a basketball for a few weeks too. The oral surgeon was so much better--the procedure took like 10-15 mins. for both teeth, and I iced just like he said and I didn't swell at all. It did hurt, and it was hard to eat, but it was so much better than my time with the dentist. The surgeon said they are just so much more used to doing it since it is what they do pretty much all day long. If you need an oral surgeon recommendation in Suffolk, FM me, the surgeon I used was really good. Good luck! Definitely get it out of the way now--you don't want to be in pain on the wedding or HM!

I had all 4 done at the same time....what would ya like to know????

I went to a surgeon and did the IV...I told them they had to put me under because I have a gag reflex and I might end up biting them.....

Recovery wasn't too bad....took Advil for pain for maybe 3-4 days, couldn't eat much for 4-5 days. I ws mostly tired.

I had all 4 out at once too. Definitely go with the IV, the bottom ones are harder to get out than the tops (usually). In most cases with impactions they saw into your jaw bone, that is not something you want to be awake for.

The top ones heal a little faster because their position allows for proper drainage. The bottoms take longer. I still smoked when I had mine out so I got dry socket on bottom, that is not fun at all.

If you have yours out within the next couple of weeks you should have no problems for your wedding.

Re: Help - Wisdom Tooth

Def go to the oral surgeon with the IV. I am deathly afraid of dentists and I had to get 2 wisdom teeth pulled. They give you a prescription (codeine) that will knock you right out. I used that the day of the procedure and the next day. After the second day there really isnt much pain, but you still want to eat soft foods until they take the stitches out (1 week). You feel a TON better, its all worth it. I highly doubt this will affect your wedding, but dont wait too long!! Good luck!!

Thanks for all the advice! Glad that I am not alone here in all of this...i just wish it was not so near the wedding, i have so much other crap going on!

I am actually having just my upper left one for now taken out. That is why my dentist seemed against being sedated. He said its pretty easy and there is not all that tugging that i am probably imagining.

I'm going to insist on antibotics, just because in the past with a root canal i was not given anything and my entire face swelled up. The infection went into my sinus and almost my brain so i will never take that chance again! And is probably why i am sooo bugging out about this

For the one of you had dry socket what is that??? I heard it is very painful and I want to try everything in my power to avoid that.

I had dry socket. It is when the blood clot is lost, so the gum can't heal over the space. It is very painful--started about 3 days after surgery, when things should be getting better, it got much worse. They did tell me it happens more with the lower teeth, so you probably have nothing to worry about. Avoid sucking, using a straw, or smoking--anything like that can make it happen. But I did none of those things--the surgeon said some people even said it has to do with when in your menstrual cycle you are. He packed the dry socket with medicine, and it got better in a few days. Honestly the top tooth was no problem at all--I heard they are more gentle if you are awake (and then there is less swelling), so I was glad I did the novocaine. The top tooth took maybe 3 mins.--he clamped it, twisted, and out it came! FH wanted to save the tooth, but I don't know what happened to it....

I did the same-all 4 out at once and IV. I was out w/in seconds! I didn't want to hear my teeth being ripped out, either! Even w/ all 4 at the same time I was fine in under a week. The doc will give you painkillers (just in case) and an antibiotic. It'll be a piece of cake!

Re: Help - Wisdom Tooth

I had 2 wisdom teeth pulled. I did them both thru oral surgery - on emergency surgery actually because I woke up in extreme pain (I knew for a while I had to get them done eventually but was waiting for the new year for insurance purposes). Anyway, one could have just been pulled but one oral surgery was needed so I did them both that way. I had a fine recovery. I got it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday morning. I was a little puffy on Monday but nothing major. I was eating pretty normal soon after the surgery too....but I did the same when I had my tonsils out....so maybe I am the strange one.

Now - almost 10 years later, I still never went to get the other 2 removed - my dentist wants to kill me... : )
