Help with booking a DJ!!!

I will be meeting with DJs soon.
What kinds of questions do I ask?
How do I know if someone is good or not?
If all he is doing is playing songs that you requested, what quality or characteristic should I be looking for?
What types of things should I look out for?
I don't really like an MC, because I always find them to be annoying. What are the pros and cons of an MC?

I would appreciate any feedback. I feel very lost here!!!

Re: Help with booking a DJ!!!

We booked Music by Michael. He was the first DJ we looked at and we booked him on the spot. He was not at all like those big impersonal DJ/MC's that I also dislike. He really cared about what he does and he only books one wedding per day so that he can give you that personal touch. We also heard very good things about him and we really clicked with his personality. I think you just really have to go with your gut feeling

Re: Help with booking a DJ!!!

The MC can get people out on the dance floor and get them excited!!!
what do they wear? they should say tuxes.
are they insured?
can you give them a playlist?
do they have a video or 2 of past weddings that you can watch?
do they LOVE music?
do they KNOW music?
how do they make you feel?
will they play your wedding or do they find someone else for that day? they should say i do your wedding.

Re: Help with booking a DJ!!!

make sure they don't steal the spotlight. our dj impressed us when he said that he will not be the star of our wedding video!

Re: Help with booking a DJ!!!

This from a post where I replied to someone else also looking for help with DJ questions. Hope it helps!

Ask how many people they bring with them that you will have to FEED at your reception. Trust me, I didn't ask for my e-party and I was shocked to find that my DJ's assistant brought a date who I HAD TO PAY FOR. Boy, I was livid. I ended up paying for three plates instead of the ONE I was expecting.

Ask about their cancellation policy, backup equipment (what will they do if one of their speakers blows during the reception?), what they wear (trust me, you want to ask this one too!), and if the person you are meeting with (if you like them) will be your DJ/MC. If not, do you get to choose? Alot of the bigger DJ companies employ several DJs and MCs and they don't let you choose who will be yours -- they pick for you and you may not like who they pick. So make sure you can at least meet with the actual MC (most important) beforehand.

If your cocktail hour and reception are in 2 different rooms and they will be handling both, ask about the equipment in this situation. Do they move it? (Hint: that means no music for a little while) Or do they bring 2 sets of equipment (better)?

Ask how they will handle guest requests.

What will they do if you your MC can't make it that night (if he's sick or something)? I know some of these may sound a little paranoid but you'll be surprised that the better DJ companies don't look at you like you are crazy when ask these questions. They answer you without skipping a beat because they know stuff happens and it shows they have experience with handling sticky situations.

Also, ask to see a video tape of a recent wedding (preferrably featuring YOUR MC). They should have this handy so you can see them in action. Ask about any upcoming showcases so that maybe you can see them in action before you decide to book.

Good luck!!
