i used acrylic paint on mine, they came out fine

Just use folk art paints and then spray them with either a glossy finish or a matte finish. Folk art paint dries flat and doesn't feel nice to the touch.

you can use acrylic, you could use Spray Paint for a faster coat, do 2 layers, you can use Craft paint, Tempera, pretty much any kind of paint will adhere to wood.
