help with grammar!

I am working on my Save the Date letters:

We are happy to announce that on July 12, 2003, we are getting married in Long Island, NY!

Is it IN Long Island or ON Long Island?

I think it depends on how you look at it.
Manhattan is also an island, but we never say 'ON' Manhattan. We say 'IN' Manhattan. Long island actually is 'part' of an island, the entire island consists of LI, Queens and Bklyn, broken up by governmental borders (notice no bridges between these 3)

So 'ON' can technically mean any of these 3, while 'IN' specifies LI only.

Get it?

Sadly enough, I was an English major in college!

IT's one of those wierd ones...like why do we always say 'the Bronx' and not 'the Queens' or 'the Staten Island'...That is my deep thought for the day!

I think it is officially IN, because Long Island is a region/city type thing. However, I always say ON, I think it makes much more sense!!!

It is IN but everyone says on, if you want to be correct it is IN.
