help with Greece

I'm planing on honeymooning in Greece (Athens, Mykonos and Santorini), and want to find a tour operator that plans the trip, assists us with getting to the various cities/islands, but then also leave us alone. Can anyone recommend a good tour operator that does this?

Re: help with Greece

Sorry, I didn't take a tour, but I did a 10-day trip to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos about 5 years ago and I have a suggestion for you for when you're in Santorini (which might be the most heavenly, romantic place on earth). Make sure you take a boat out to the volcano and hike it (EASY and very cool).

We did a day-long trip out on a glass-bottom boat that took us to the volcano, and then to a natural hot springs where everyone jumped off the boat and into the Aegean Sea and it was like a spa (the water was naturally warm and bubbly and the locals were slathering themselves with the mud, it's supposed to be magic on your skin). Then back on the boat to an itty-bitty island with a population of about 50 where you had to ride donkeys to the top of the island where the village was (no joke! it was on top of a hill!). There was a little cafe and we all ate together and then when out exploring the island on our own. Then back on the donkeys to the boat, to Santorini. It was not a strenuous day at all, but it was the best time I had in all my 10 days there. We just saw an ad for it somewhere and booked it that morning - go down to the cliffs where the boats leave from and you'll be able to just hop on a tour from there.

Have fun!

Anemos tours is fantastic. I didn't go on my honeymoon there, but went on a 3 week trip.
It was fantastic.
Stavros is the person who did my whole trip. I think their website is anemostours.com

I'm planning the same trip for my honeymoon and I am going to book it on my own. I've actually already booked my hotel on Santorini. It will save you some cash and I've gotten some great info off of tripadvisor.com.

It's obviously up to you whether or not you want to deal with it. I honestly don't mind planning my own vacations.

Re: help with Greece

Hi All,
I actually work in the travel industry, so while I know that planning a trip on your own may save you more, going with a tour operator will probably save you some headaches...especially in Greece where the ferries to the islands run sporadically (or not at all...deciding to cancel on a whim) and where I know that hordes of people flock to Piraeus (the main port) and there is mass confusion, especially in the high season summer months. A tour operator that would get me from place A to B, would be awesome, and woudld also save me some time in researching and planning my own trip.

I've actually traveled extensively in Europe (on my own) however with Greece the logistics just seem a bit confusing to me.

Any other advice is most appreciated.
Thanks!

I actually travel to different parts of Greece every year and in my opionion nothing is confusing there. There are time tables/schedules for buses and ferries, planes etc etc to anywhere you want to go that are accurate and on time. I have never gone through a travel agent, I am my own travel agent, lolol.

I have to agree with MPAS. No doubt a tour operator makes it easier, but I did a tour of Athen, Mykonos, Naxos, Ios, Santorini and caught the high speed ferries between each without a problem. On each of the islands there are a bunch of ferry offices near the port who will tell you when their boats leave, sell you tickets, and tell you exactly when to leave. Especially when you are dealing with the bigger companies and the hi-speed ferries, cancellations aren't really a problem. I think that reputation is really a left over from before they moderinzed all the boats, etc. Not saying you shouldn't go with an operator if you want too, but you shouldn't feel like you have to. I actually really liked the freedom of being able to get on a boat whenever I wanted (like if I loved and island I could stay and extra day or two, etc.).

Yeah I like doing things on my own time there and not on someones elses, but yeah some people do prefer tour operators bec they have everything planned out for you but FH and I prefer to do it on our own. I am actually going on Sat and FH and I planned the whole thing

I absolutey agree!

FH and I have planned our Greece HM on our own. Other than a few select tours that we really want to go to, we leave everything else open because it gives us the freedom to do and explore what we want.

Try ABC Tours, I used them to go to Greece and it was fantastic.

We are planning our HM to Greece next July. We were thinking about going for 12 days. So far, we are going to stay in Athens for 2 nights and 1 day, then Mykonos, and then Santorini. I was thinking about adding one more Island, either Crete or Corfu. Any suggestions?

Would you want to travel over to the Ionian Islands, its absolutely amazing on the other side. If you want you can research Kefalonia, Zakinthos, Kerkyra (Corfu) I heard is fantastic. Good Luck, I am also planning on going in July

Re: help with Greece

I would highly recommend that you look into Gate 1 travel. FH and I took a 14 day Greece island hopper with them and it was one of the most fantastic vacations ever.

It was an independant tour, but there was always a guide to meet you when you got to your new destination.. and if there were any issues with anything, the guide was a phone call away. (we had 1 issue, and it was rectified within a few minutes).

if you need any additional info, feel free to FM me!

happy planning!
