I'm thinking maybe Hawaii for a HM....I've heard it can be very expensive, and I've also heard it's really cheap. Who do I believe? I have no idea where to start. I know I would love to go to Maui. But are there two islands that make up Maui? Does anybody have any info on good hotels and reasonable air fare? Where do I start?
Edited for spelling...

I'd say it gets expensive. Between flights in between islands, the flight there, etc. You can probably do economy hoetls when you arrive though. Maui is not two islands - it is one. Hawaii itself is comprised of several different islands. Of them I am going to Maui, Oahu and Kauai. I think you should include more information like what kind of experience you're looking for (the islands are so different) so people can suggest hotels on each. And as far as air fare - dyou plan to stay over at another mainland location to braek up your trip, or just fly direct?

It gets expensive and fast. One of the main things is meals since much of the food is flown in. Meals will cost you a lot.
dh and I considered a Hawaii HM for a bit, but once we made approx. cost lists, we turned away.

Hawaii is an expensive place because everything gets shipped there. The cost of living is high. Maui is one island and is gorgeous. I just went to Oahu and Maui in May and it wasn't deifnately not a cheap place.

I'm thinking maybe staying in Maui for a week or so. Beach definitely, but maybe 4 wheeling for FH, and a drive up the coast to see some of the waterfalls and such.

The only way I know it is affordable is if you backpack and camp out. I know a bunch of people that did that and saved a ton of money.

I just got home from Hawaii. It is expensive...the flights are costly and the food will get you. There are no all inclusive resorts there so you are paying for every meal, and they are costly. However, you can look out for less expensive restaurants, we found some but chose to eat at the really nice ones...we also stayed at the Hyatt in Maui where breakfast was included and that saved us some money. Luckily, my parents donated a week of their timeshare to us so on Kauai we stayed for free...still even with the timeshare it was an expensive honeymoon. BUTTT so beautiful!! We had a great time and wish we were still there!

Hawaii can get expensive but I think it wil be well worth it......when is the next time you will be able to go on an extravagant vacation like this??? That is why we chose to just go for it and do it now. We are staying at the Hyatt on both Maui and Kauai. I would look into it though with your travel agent because I'm sure they will be able to find something affordable.
Good luck!!!

Re: Help with Hawaii....
I'm going to Hawaii for my HM for 9 days. We're going to Oahu, the Big Island and Maui. It is pricey, but when I actually found out the price for me and FH, I didn't think it was so bad. Between the flights, hotel, and car rental, it's costing approx $5,200. I guess I mentally prepared myself to be willing to splurge on my HM. I know there will definitely be added expenses once we're there, but I guess also living in NY, it's not such a shock to pay lots of money for things. Also, we're technically going in their off season, so I suppose my whole package would really be more during other times of the year.
We're staying at the Outrigger in Oahu, and then the Marriott on the Big Island and in Maui. The places also include breakfast each day, so at least one of our meals is covered.
I've heard Maui is a lot of fun and a great island for partying. So we're spending the most days there.
It looks like your wedding is in October, so I think it's also considered an off season, so you could probably get good deals at places. I'd say check things out with a travel agent.
Also, I bought the Frommer's Hawaii book and have found it really helpful! So definitely look into that to get an idea of where to stay in Hawaii.
Also, if you decide to just visit one island, you'd save on airfare. Also, maybe check out doing a cruise to the different islands. The cruise prices weren't that bad and it'd include meals.
I definitely think there are ways to get a nice deal for Hawaii that won't make you go broke. Yes you will spend a good amount of money, but it's worth it, and it's your HM so go for it!

hawaii is expensive....on Maui I stayed in Kehei...it is a less expensive area, but walking distance to all the luxury of Wailea. Frommers guide is good for finding less expensive places to eat, I found some real gems. Hotel Hana Maui is worth the splurge for one night, most beautiful place I have ever been.
