So I am having a really hard time choosing between a small band (4-5 piece like Magic or CD and Company) and a DJ (absolute entertainment/body rock). My parents really want a band but I am concerned because of the small size and their inability to play the music we like appropriately. Also I haven't heard any reviews on small bands here. What should we choose and why? Any one else have small band and not orchestras that were happy? Thanks so much for your help, at this point FH and I think we are leaning towards a DJ because of our concerns above.

how about doing both. perhaps starting with the band and ending with the dj. that way you get the best of both worlds.

Re: Help!need advice/suggestion
Is your choice of a small band based on price or on something else? if it's price, there are some larger, lesser known bands that are less expensive than most other bands.

Re: Help!need advice/suggestion
Yes it's based on budget. We have to stay under 3,500. So it seems that anything >a 5 piece band is $$$. I think I would feel better about doing a small band over a DJ if I had some idea of people's experiences because we are out of town and are going through my parents opinions (can be scary hehe)

I chose band...that said, it really depends on what type of music you're looking for. I am getting a band bc I DO NOT want the macarena, electric slide, ymca etc. So...for me a band is the best way to go. I also love live music. It's really personal preference. Hope this helped!

You can definitely find a dj for under 3500. There are also some dj's that offer additional feautures like adding a sax player, percussionist, etc. if you are interested in that. Just an idea if you are unsure of any bands

Re: Help!need advice/suggestion
i am in the process of booking a great band that also has the option of having a dj. i am booking them as a 6 piece band but i saw them last night as a 5 piece and they were awsome. i was told that they only need 3 or 4 pieces to get most of their sounds right. they have a good range or music styles and if there is anything they cant play that we would like the dj can play it, and the dj will also provide 2 hours of overtime if we need it.
FM if you'd like details

Ok, thanks for the great advice so far. Has any one had experience adding lets say a sax to a DJ as a combo? Did you like the effect? For some reason I thought the music was going to be the easier part of the planning process:(

I added a live percussionist to my dj. I saw it a t a friends wedding 3 years ago and knew in the first 5 minutes that I NEEDED to have that for my wedding. It is amazing, Tommy's Tunes is the only 1 I have seen, and loved so we booked with them.

I have! Body Rock has the option to add a sax player. I had a sax, drummer, and vocalist, ontop of my DJ and MC, but did not use Body Rock. I used DDE. My friend used Body Rock and they added the sax, but to be honest I didn't think that it was a real drastic change. Good Luck

Many DJs have where you can add on. I'm adding a percussionist and possible and sax player with my DJ, spin around sound. I also really like bravura entertainment.
