Can anyone help me understand what the deal is with pre canna's? Do you need them if you are not getting married in a church? do you need them if you are not getting married in a church, but are getting married by a priest? What are the rules?

Re: HELP???Rules on Pre Canna classes???
I think its only necessary if you are having a mass or ceremony in a catholic church.
I heard it was necessary if you want to get married by a Catholic preist anywhere, church or hall.

The rule is that you have to go to pre-cana if you are getting married in a catholic church AND if you are getting married by a priest, deacon, minister outside of church. I was married at WCC, but had to go to pre-cana.
ETA - if you get married out of church, you go to pre-cana so the church will recongize your marriage.

Who is doing your ceremony? They'll tell you if you def have to go. Dh and I went to an 'interfaith' pre-cana, because DH is Jewish.. It wasnt bad at all!!! We only had it for 2 nights, for 2 hours each night...

FH cousin is doing the ceremony....it's the MIL....she's already starting that she wants the baptism records so she can set up precana at her parish. It's my sisters wedding...they live in the city, MIL lives on the island...makes no sense
