Hi Girls..NWR but really freaked out

Sorry if this is long, but I am so freaked out right now...

I babysit for three families. Two of them are just absolutely wonderful to me; they treat me like an old family friend.

The newest family does not. They don't really seem to have an interest in my life. They (especially the father) seems to get annoyed if I ask questions. But I need to ask questions, because every family raises their child differently and I want to know the specifics. However, that is fine- I can deal with that.

I've been with them for 2 months and I have not worked a straight full week yet; they keep cancelling on me. They had a new baby about a month ago, so obviously I understand at that time; that's a different story. However, the rest of the time, I get really really stressed because I need the money!

Now, that dad has given me an attitude twice. Not a harsh one, but a bit of an attitude over nothing. One time I asked if I should let their cat in, and he nastily was like I CAN'T HEAR YOU.

So today, I get there. I ring the bell. When I ring the bell, their dogs bark. But they've never said 'don't ring the bell' or anything like that, so I always do.

So I ring the bell. The dad is cutting something in the kitchen. As he is walking toward the door, he points the steak knife at me and nastily says 'Don't ring the bell.'

I am SO freaked out. The kid is a nightmare and doesn't listen to me EVER anyway in addition to me being really scared.

The way I see it, I have a few options. The writing center at my school MIGHT be hiring soon, so I'm going to go there and check it out. My birthday is also on Friday, so I was hoping that maybe I'd get enough cash to hold me over. I figured I'd go there tomorrow, get my money, and then call them over the weekend and quit. Honestly, I'm freaked out to quit in person after the knife thing.

However, the problem is that both getting bday money + getting a job at the writing center are gambles. I don't know for sure.

Do you girls think I'm being overdramatic? What should I do? I'm so ughh right now

I think you need to go with your gut on this one. If you feel like it's a yucky situation then get out. Plus, if they keep cancelling on you, how much money are you REALLY losing anyway? You can find something else!

Sounds like a lot of unneeded stress for not a lot of money. Honestly Id probably quit, I wouldn't want someone treating me like that, you deserve better.

It sounds like the dad is a real winner.

If you feel that uncomfortable in the house you need to quit. Talk to the mom and tell her quite truthfully that her husband makes you very uncomfortable, and you time is precious and you cannot keep being cancelled on.

And do you think it might be necessary to involve child services? It certainly seems like the father has anger issues and it is not a safe environment for a child.

Wait he pointed at the knifeee? Is he serious? What the hell? Thats not cool and certainly the attitude isnt called for. I completely understand the money situation but endangering your safety possibly isnt worth it.

I would honestly be freaking out. No money is worth feeling scared. I would try to hope the other options work and just say goodbye to this job.

Omg, that's really scary! I'd definitely quit! Doesn't sound like a good situation, and you aren't making much off them anyways if they keep canceling on you...

OMG what a jerk employer. If I were you, I'd be looking for new employment ASAP. Just call them and give them your two weeks. You will find something else and you don't need to put up with that!

Your time is precious and you cannot have it wasted. You can employ a cancellation policy. My FH (I just typed bf and had to go back and correct myself!) teaches guitar lessons and his policy is if you cancel with less than 24 hours, you lose the money. If you cancel with 24+ hours, you have to make up the time. Obviously you can't make them make up the time, but you can employ a cancellation policy. If they cancel with less than 10 hours notice (for example), they have to give you half the money you would have made because they wasted your time.

I don't know if this is realistic for babysitting, but it might work. I'd try this before quitting. If they refuse to abide by the policy...quit!

Also, try finding something else. If you find another family, you can drop this one. Good luck!!
