Hi I am new here!

Hi I am new here!

Hi I just got engaged yesterday and it wasn't a total surprise as I helped pick out the ring, but I have been lurking on here for a while, so I thought I would introduce myself.

I have semi started my planning, but my situation is a little difficult to plan in as i am located in Sydney, Australia. FH is Australian and we met in Germany while both on a study abroad year for our degrees. German was my major and his is German and law. He is finishing up law here. I moved here to be with him earlier this year and to do my MA in Linguistics. Our relationship is globalisation in action, lol.

So here I am engaged now. Ican't really do much planning b/c i am far away, but i will be in NY (FH wont be with me) for 2 months for Xmas and I hope to get it all done then and there. We plan to get married in NY in July 2006. We are going to talk to a priest here this week, and then he has to email the priest on LI so then we can set a date.

Anyone else here plan their wedding when they werent living on LI? Any tips?

Sorry for the looooong read!

COngrats!!! and Welcome, this will become an obsession quick!
I am planning from SC and the only thing I can tell you is the girls on here-planning or already married-will give you their honest opinions on vendors and prices and things that they ran into on the way.
I read the reviews-take notes on the vendors and then b/c I am so far away usuallyemail them telling them where I am and asking for a price quote telling them exactly what I am looking for. Most will email you back, some will tell you to call and others will send you info thru the mail
But ask any questions youhave on the boards, you will get answers and it will help.
Thanks to the ladies on here, I have all of my MUST see vendors and my secondary vendors for when I am in NY.

Good Luck and Happy Planning!

What are you doing about your dress? My mother is telling me that I should get it in NY when I am home and then I can get it sized the time right before the wedding (yeah right, mom!). I will probably come home 2 weeks prior. I just think it would be easier to get it here and then fly home with it then.

I went last week to look and I didnt realise that Maggie Sottero is Australian so the dresses here come out earlier than they do in the States. At least that is what the saleslady told me....

on average how long do alterations take? Is it possible to get it done in such a short amount of time before the wedding?

Re: Hi I am new here!

We will be driving to NY about 1 1/2 weeks before, I will most likely get my dress here and take it with.
It makes me nervous thinking about having to fly with it. As far as alterations I am not sure...But usually you have a couple of fittings before the wedding, for wieght gain and loss, so if it is only a few weeks before you should be able to do one fitting and be done. I dont know how long they take.
If you do a search you might find some info on seamstresses on Long Island, and maybe give them a call and see how long...
Just whatever you do-dont check your dress!!! I watched an episode of 'Airplane' and they beat the crap out of her dress!

Congratulations on your engagement!

I don't have any 'major' advice that wasn't covered. Definitely ask any and all questions you may have, the majority of the ladies here are very helpful. I planned my wedding on my own and found theknot.com to be very helpful as well, so I recommend it. Although I have to admit that LIW is a much closer community and much more user friendly.

Happy planning!

Welcome to the obsession. Australia is beautiful!! I hope you are enjoying your time there, even if it does mean long distance wedding planning.

I am planning from NC and I am bringing my dress (altered and everything) on the plane with me.

Congratulations on your engagement! Best of luck with all of your planning.

Don't you LOVE Sydney? I was born in Melbourne and I am anxious to go back and visit both places.

Re: Hi I am new here!

Congrats! This should prove to be challenging but can your mom help you since she's here. I think you should get your dress here if you find a designer than can get the dress in time. I also think that you can get your alterations done quickly before the wedding. It would be a little stressful but overall I think it would work out.

We are all here to help. Please let us know if there's anything you need. These women are the best!
