Hi ladies!! Thoughts on a cocktail wedding?

I'm trying to keep the cost down on this wedding, in order to be able to invite all of the people that we want to....so we were thinking of just a giant cocktail party all night...no sit down dinner. Please give me your honest thoughts and opinions....

I have heard of this, not sure how I feel. I will tell you that DH's uncle apparently had a wedding like this, and the story comes up every time someone gets married (which is a lot since his dad has 8 siblings and he has like 45 first cousins) b/c apparently everyone got really drunk since there was no meal!

So just be warned about that! But I think it can be really classy....

You could also do a brunch or a luncheon to save money or try it on an off day like Sunday

if you are going to do the cocktail evening, maybe have it as a cocktail/dessert event and set it to start after dinner and I would also make sure the guests know so they dont come hungry

Just a heads up, some places charge more for a cocktail style reception than for an actual sit down dinner! Since they have to keep the food coming all night long, they jack up the price. So it might not be any less expensive to do it that way, but I still love the idea

I looked into this too and many were more expensive than sit down but there were a few that were cheaper... but not by much.

it depends, if theres alot of food it is fine but some places wont give alot of food, i went to one like this and i barely ate anything...and yes like it was said above, most ppl didnt get to eat that much and they were drinking mostly.

Also even if you do cocktail reception make sure theres seats for everybody, many cocktail receptions there arent seats for everybody

I think it's cool..especially if the crowd is younger.
My 9/20 California reception is this format, and it has been soooooooooooo much easier to plan.

maybe you could consider places like Knights of Columbus. the one in Seaford has a huge upstairs room and the costs would be lower than typical RH's.

In 2006 the Galaxie caterers on rte 109 gave us a quote of
around $43 for 1/2 hr cocktail hr of passed appetizers only -dinner of salmon/roast beef/chicken -- wedding cake and ice cream and beer/wine/soda ,no open bar. it was very modest but price was good I think for what you'd get. you could add on but there went the price.

anyway, these might be options for you.

I wanted this, but my very old school family doesn't recognize this type of thing as a wedding reception and I was told it would confuse them to the point that they would force me to re-do it!

If your closest family and friends wouldn't be 'offended' by it, I'd say go for it! They do this thing in the city all the time. Weddings are really overrated.. (don't shoot me, im cranky, planning is stressing me out)

honestly that is the best part of the food for the wedding - so go for it!

Re: Hi ladies!! Thoughts on a cocktail wedding?

my friend got married a few months ago and had a cocktail reception...I gotta say I was somewhat disappointed...

1- there were tables to sit at, but the tables and food stations were in 2 different rooms, so half the guests didn't see each other all that time

2- there were 4 food stations and several passed appetizers, and the portions that were served were very small. The reception started at ~2:30, basically lunch time and people were hungry, so we had to go back 3 or 4 times to get food until we felt satisfied...we felt like pigs that we had to go back so many times, but we were hungry!
