I think you can get a high centerpiece for less than that, although I think on average florists might ask for no less than $100. Although there are a few that will charge less depending on the type of flowers who want and the volume of flowers you want in the centerpiece. Most high centerpieces that I saw for less than $100 tend to have quite a bit of filler (i.e. ferns etc.) if you don't mind that too much.
Also, a nice way to save is to go for jumbo callas in a tall vase, with bear grass. You can get wonderful height without breaking your flower budget. I got that advice from John at flower michelle. Before I chose the centerpiece I ended going with for my reception, he was going to do this for me.
I think if you negotiate you will definitely find someone willing to work with your budget. Just be sure to let the florists know you have set point that you are not willing go beyond and ask them to show the best they can give you for your price point.
I have a question, when you use high centerpieces liek those that are on candelabras, do your guests get to keep the centerpieces candelabra's and all or are the flowers removable so your guests can take home just the flowers?

nope. it's the property of the florist. those things are really expensive, so make sure your guests dont walk out with one!

the flowers get removed from the candelabra. Do you know how much each candelabra costs??
My uncle Mario tries to walk out with one..and he is maybe 4'11 and the candelabra's are pretty high..it was a funny moment but not worth the money if he would of gotten away with it..
This is my worst fear - a relative walking out with the entire thing. I'm having the DJ make an announcement.
