ok, so now i'm thinking i want someone to take a few pics at the engagement party. a friend of ours is an amazing photographer (she mostly does shows but is learning the wedding business). ideally, i'd love to hire her to take some pictures, however we want her at the party as a guest as well. my fathers already made me promise not to hire her for the wedding (they hired a friend when they got married, and now my parents only have one picture from their wedding ) if you were me, what would you do?

Re: hiring a friend?
I wouldn't hire her to be the only one to take pictures. Encourage her to take pictures if she wants, but I would rather have my friend enjoy the party then worry about pictures! Does she have any friends in the buisness? Maybe she can help you find someone for a good price?

I would not recommend it from a recent experience I had. Your expectations and the final outcome are going to be two different things. If you want your friend there as a guest, let her be just that. I would hire someone outside.

i wouldnt hire her...things could get very messy for you if you do. If she gets insulted you didnt hire her just tell her you would rather her be a guest than a 'worker' and that if she would like to take pictures on her own accord then she is welcome to do so.

what kinda throws a wrench in the works and changes everything is that she had asked me if she could do pics for us to add to her portfolio, but i think she meant the wedding pics

Re: hiring a friend?
DH has 2 friends who are semi-pro photographers .... one of them does weddings. We did not hire either of them because we wanted them to enjoy the reception, and not feel obligated to walk around taking pictures.
They did bring their cameras with them, and we got some great pictures from them before we even left for the honeymoon!
Also, I have learned from first hand experience, its better for everyone involved to keep friends and business separate. Almost lost my best friend because of a situation.

I guess it depends on what you think she would say.. If she asked if she could take pics of you guys for a portfolio, this might be an opportunity for her to get a portfolio going... but if you feel uncomfortable asking then you shouldnt

i understand that you're saying you'd only consider hiring her for the e-party.
i'm saying that i wouldn't mix business and friendship if there were any way to possibly avoid it.
