What do you mean by 'history'? If you mean who previously owned it, you would need to do a title search.

I don't think you can just do a 'title search'. This was something we paid for once we signed the contract.

You could do a title search if you were trained in it, but considering you didn't even know about it you shouldn't even try b/c you could seriously screw it up. You need to either pay a title co. or an abstract co. to do it for you.

No- just in Suffolk and 4 of the five boroughs (acris)

What are you looking to find out? I'm trying to figure out why you want to know it at this point (I'm a reader and clearance officer in a title/abstract company.)

The records won't tell you what the house looked like, they'll only tell you who the previous record title holders were.

Why don't you ask them if they have pics? Or ask a neighbor?

As was already stated, pictures will give the best indication. But you could also do this if you want to find out some more information and if you're in the mood to do some research:

If the house was built in the time when CO's were required, the building plans may be on file in the town building department. That along with the CO's will give you an idea of what was done. (If you can't get a hold of pictures.)

A lot of times the building plans are pulled to confirm if parts of the house are part of the original structure and therefore, included in the CO. For example, the CO doesn't state that there is a front porch if it is part of the original structure. You'll only see a CO for it if it was added later on.
