Switzerland is nice...I've been to Lucerne and Zurich...its expensive though. What about Austria? Alps are just as gorgeous there, and its quite a bit cheaper. I think France is even cheaper than Austria...atleast it was last year when we looked into it. If you decide on Austria I could probably give you some info if you need since my FH is Austrian :]

Now, where in France and Austria would you recommend staying? Meaning which city or towns? Is it driveable from Switzerland? Maybe we'll split up the trip

Well I dunno much about France, but where in Austria you stay would depend on what exactly you want to do... just skiing? Do you want more of a laid back, quite place, or a party town? And of course budget comes into play because some ski areas are pretty popular with the rich n famous so those tend to be fairly pricey. And yea, its no problem to drive between Austria and Switzerland...especially if you go more towards Vorarlberg which boarders Switzerland.
This is where we went last year... In Tirol, called Mayerhofen...part of the Ziller Tal Arena...was awesome.
I went to zermatt a few years ago - I loved it - we did a package that included our breakfast and dinner at the hotel - the food was wonderful - everything was amazing
we took the train into zermatt because that is the only way to get there - they only have electrci cars around the town for transporting bags and supplies - everyone walks -
the skiing was very good - we were there in march - the lifts are intereesting - there are gondola, trams, incline rtrains through the mountain, cog trains, t-bars, and chairlifts - we had one powder day and we had fresh tracks in one bowl for hours because the europeans are on holiday and do not get out early like americans
the skiing overall i think is easier then most of the rockies skiing - a lot of groomed- very few mogul runs -nice open areas - and faboulous restaurants- european skiing is more like touring than hard skiing
zermatt is nice because you can also ski ito italy - have lunch on that side and come back there are dog-sled tours to the bottom of the matterhorn
the shops ewere very cute- tons of watch stores - great crepe place and cheese fondue everywhere - but i actually loved the boulabaise fondue at the hotel - there all pretty small hotels - i don't remeber where we stayed - but i loved it there
I have also been to kitzbuel in Austria - it is very nice also -alot more built up - larger hotels - good food but i prefer french and that is more what switzerland does - also the swiss are easier to communicate with almost everyone speaks french, german, and english -
if you go to austria - most of the pakages include a day in salzberg which is nice
there are lots of great packages over there
also if you do a tour with a train to the mountain - pay the extra money to get your bags sent from the airport to your hotel - no lugging between different trains - we had to change twice from zurich to zermatt
