HM help...I have a question for all of you that bring your laptops on vacation.

I am going to the Dominican Republic for my honeymoon and want to bring my laptop. I want to be able to take as many pics as I want without having to worry about buying a billion memory cards. If I bring my laptop I can just dl them from the camera. Anyway, my question is, where do I keep it in the hotel? Is it safe to do this? I don't want to get my laptop stolen. Thanks ladies.

I've always brought my laptop with me on vacation. We usually leave it in the hotel room, covered -- (not to HIDE it necessarily, but not to make an invitation for someone to take it!)

We've never had a problem, and we've brought it all over -- Spain, Italy, France, etc.

they generally have safes at hotels if you're really worried or you could buy a laptop lock. i would just put it in the bottom of my suitcase under a bunch of clothes when i wasn't there. maybe you could zip that up and lock it.

also, you could just put the 'do no disturb' sign on the door so no one comes in in the first place.

Nevermind hotel......can you even bring in onboard the flight these days? I would look into that- my husband always brings his to do the same thing with digital pics but told me its banned from carry-ons and he doesnt want it checked.

I could be wrong or it mightve changed since but look into it

I just came back from the DR.

In regards to electronics on flight (post above!). So far, yes you can bring electronic on board.

Safe in hotel: The one on our room was not big enough for a laptop (the door opening). Well, mine would not have fit in. Maybe the hotel has another safe at the reception. You could check with your hotel. In regards to 'plugs'. Get yourself an 'extension'. The outlet are recessed in and you cannot always plug a charger in it. In case you need one they should sell them in the gift shop of your hotel (ours did).

I've only brough my to FL, but I've always put it in the safe in the hotel room. Mine is a pretty small laptop though and the last hotel we went to, it barely fit in the safe. If not there should be a safe at the front desk that you can keep it in.

usually put it in the safe [ if its big enough] or kind of hide it, not just leave it out on the bed for room service to get a wide eye of it n clean around it lol....

best bet is to keep it in ur suitcase n have a lil lock on ur suitcase!

I didn't even think about electronics being banned on flights. Yikes. Maybe I should just ask a few people for their memory cards, lol.

It's not banned. Just liquid and gels.

We had the same issue and did a lot of research on this because we didn't want to bring our laptop. Good thing we didn't too - like sr said, it won't fit in the safe.

If you have an iPod with a color screen (it has to be color - like a video iPod), you can use it like a big memory card and store your pictures on there. You just need an adapter that you can buy at the iPod store online.

If not, you might consider this:

Epson P2000 portable hard drive, picture viewer, and MP3/MPEG player

We found it to be the best reviewed and the best value for it's cost among all the other portable hard drives out there. It can play video clips, MP3's and display large versions of photos from your camera. It's not stereo sound but you could plug in a pair of headphones and listen to music on the plane if you wanted.

There are slots for the memory card, it takes about 15 minutes to transfer a full 2GB card. Then you can erase your memory card. And it fits in the safe. And it can be recharged overnight.

We used it to show everyone our honeymoon pictures. Since it's such a big drive, we never erased anything and never ran out of room. Since we're photography hobbyists, we knew we would use it long-term and would be lending it out to my sister for her vacation. So the cost of it made sense. It might not for a 'one time use' kind of situation.

FM me if you want any more info!

Just an FYI, our hm was 21 days & we were all over Europe & took about 900 pictures. We were fine w/ our 1 gb card.

we took ours. I didnt even think about it. I left it on the desk all hooked up. But now that i think about it i should of put it in a safe. if it doesnt fit i would of put it in my luggage and locked my luggage. Not that it still cant be taken but at least it is outta site. But y laptop was out the whole time
(dumb on my part now that i think about it!)

I also took a 2GB memory card for my camera. Enough for about 1000 photos or so. I put the camera in the safe when I was not using it.

I should mention that DH and I only shoot in 'RAW' format which is the highest quality, but takes up the most room. We can only fit about 300 RAW shots on one 2GB memory card. But if you're shooting 'JPEG', you will fit a lot of pictures on a 1or 2GB card.

If you're not planning on having big enlargements done, JPEG should be fine.
