HM in Italy... help..

Original post by m&m2005

Has anyone done a tour of Italy? FH and I are going for 2 weeks in June for our HM but we can't decide if it's better to do it on our own or take a tour. We definitley want to explore both the north and south.

Any suggestions or tour company recommedations would be great. Also, what travel agents did you use, tour or no tour?

Thanks.

Below is a list of the cities we want to visit. I know some of them can be day trips from another city.

Are any of these places in your opinion not worth going to or say, not for a HM?

Rome
Naples
Pompeii
Sorrento
Capri
Florence
Pisa
Padua
Venice
Milan
Como

MUST SEE: Venice, Florence, Rome, Capi (GO SEE THE GROTOS!), Milan

Pompeii, imo it was ok but not worth going out of your way to see.
Padua- the only thing i liked was St. Anthonys (which was interesting)

If i were to go back, i LOVED Venice and would go back. I also go the the Almafi Coast and i hear Como is beautiful too and Sicily

I love Venice and Isle of Capri. The drive to Amalfi Coast was exciting. Did you enjoy it???

Re: HM in Italy... help..

DH and I are not tour people. We ventured off on our own and it was the trip of a lifetime. We flew into Rome, drove to Monelpuciano in Tuscany, and from there did day trips to Milan, Florence, Siena, and Pisa. We both enjoy the countryside more and are happy we stayed in Montelpuciano rather than in the touristy areas. We felt like we were experiencing the Italian lifestyle much more that way. From there, we went to Cinque Terre, which I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend, especially for a honeymoon. It is surreal. You are surrounded by the bluest water and mountains, and SUCH natural beauty. You will not regret it. From there, we went to Cernobbio, right next to Como. Of course we ventured into Como while there, and even did a day trip to Lugano, Switzerland, which I HIGHLY recommend. After Cernobbio, we went to Rome, and only spent one day/night there, which was more than enough. Like I said, we're not huge city people, and weren't intrigued, esp. after taking in all of Italy's natural beauty. Then we drove to Venice, and only spent a day there, which was more than enough IMO. WE LOVED it and don't regret going there, but IMO there's only so much to do, and we'd already visited a zillion museums, churches, etc. After Tuscany and Cinque Terre, it was hard to impress us. From Venice, we went to Paris, and spent a day in St. Germain which was cool, as well. If you'd like any additional info on any of these places, feel free to send me an FM. Italy was great...you'll have a great time regardless of where you go. But you just have to decide if you would rather be adventurous, and try to get by with not knowing the language, and if you would rather explore the countryside, or just visit museums and such. For DH and I, we knew we would not be happy just doing what everybody else was doing, and we really wanted to venture beyond the regular touristy stuff. The language barrier in the nontouristy areas was a little intimidating, but just bring a phrase book and you'll do fine.

Question about Italy also...

we're flying into Rome (4 nights), then driving to Chianti (4 nights), drive to Portofino (and we're doing Cinque Terre here too) 2 nights, and then Venice for 4 nights- in Sept. After what people have been saying about Lake Como, I'd really like to go there too, but we can't extend the HM anymore (vacation days and whatnot). How far is the drive from Venice to Lake Como? Is it a better idea to do Venice for 2 nights, and Lake Como for 2 nights...or just leave it as Venice for 4 nights?

When you guys mention day trips... how long does it really take to get around from one place to the other?

Has anyone gone and started at the Amalfi coast? I'd like to get a few days of relaxing on the beach in before we start touring around. Any info would be helpful - please feel free to FM me - thanks!

Venice is amazing-a must
Rome is as well
Naples is nice too-take the day trip to Ischia and Pompeii
Capri is beautiful
Florence is OK
Pisa is a 3 hour stop-no more than that
My parents raved about Amalfi and Positano

I have to go back there.......

There are definitely some advantages to doing a tour. Including ahvign someone else do the leg work for you.
Drving in Italy is also part of the 'fun.' Talk about crazy drivers.
A happy medium would be to drive yourselves around and then sign up for day tours when you get to the individual places.
My recommedations would be Venice, Florence, Rome, Capri, Sorrento. If you can make it far enough down south try Sicily. It's beautiful and has great beaches. I would say skip Pisa and Padua. Assisi is beautiful too.

Re: HM in Italy... help..

Thanks so much girls....

I spent all my lunch looking at cities in Italy and I think I have a good idea of what we want to see, FH needs to go over it. The more I research it the longer I want to go for. There is so much to see and it all looks so beautiful.

We will try and get with a travel agent this weekend and get started on this. I can't wait to go!!!!

Honestly, having been to all of the places you mentioned, I recommend extending your Cinque Terre trip, removing Lake Como, and going to Venice for 2 nights.

ETA: I drove from LAke Como to Venice and it was rough, that's why I said take it out. It was beautiful there, but not as beautiful as where you are going in Tuscany, or Cinque Terre IMO.

Thank you!! We can't extend Cinque Terre/ Portofino b/c we're staying at the Hotel Splendido (can't afford to say there anymore than two nights ). Maybe we will shorten Venice and add another night or two to Chianti?

Re: HM in Italy... help..

Many people I have talked to have said driving in Italy is insane and dangerous, plus there road signs are confusing. Is this mainly the city areas?

Any input.....

Thanks.

Would anyone mind sharing around how much it cost them to HM in Italy? We are looking to go for 10-14 days but not sure if we have the budget for it.

When I went with my fiance. We spent about $7000 for both of us with all the extras and what not. Remember, the value of euro is higher than the value of our dollar.
