We (BM's, mom, and I) went dress shopping on friday and one of the places we went to we thought were rather shady. The women told me that I would have to pay for extra material for the BOTTOM of my dress b/c I'm tall the dresses would be too short so it would cost about 10% to add material to the BOTTOM of the dress to make it LONGER. Mind you I'm 5'8' - Tell me that isn't shady - The dresses were ALL HEMMED so that they just reached the floor - AND I KNOW this b/c I tried on the identical dresses elsewhere that morning and I was tripping over the material!
Plus the women kept pretending that she had NO IDEA where my church was and asked me 6 times where my ceremony was - and couldn't get the name of my reception place right either - BOTH are in the same town and I have not met a vendor yet who didn't know exactly where it was. Thank god they dresses were not what I was looking for.

Sounds like they were trying to get a little extra $$ from EVERYONE who comes in, not just you guys. 5'8' should fit perfectly in a regular dress, unless you're wearing heels. My 5'11' friend had to add to her hem, but that's expected. Do you mind if I ask where you were?

I'd say! At 5'8' (me too!) you're above average, but not so tall that any dress would need extra material at the bottom. Glad you didn't love the dresses there...

Every time I've been a bm, I had to pay extra for added length. I WISH it was shady, but its happened at 4 different stores! It s*cks. I need only 1/2 inch more and I pay for 6 inches! Thats what happens when you're tall!

I am 5' 7' and when I went to order my gown, I did not need extra material. Wedding gowns are suppose to be a little long. IMO, they were just trying to get extra money from you usually since you said that you went to another shop and tried on the same dress and was tripping over the extra material.

That's strange about the extra length being different in that one store. But I can tell you that every place I went to told me I would need to order extra length (bridal and and bridal party I have been in) because I am 5'8' and that is the typical cut off. They say over 5'7' you need extra length. I have never once ordered it (it is always a ton of extra $$$) and my dresses are usually just right (maybe you can see the tip of my toes but to me not worth the expense.
Glad you didn't see anything you liked there - if you found them suspect.

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
No rebecca when I went to wedding salon and BR they NEVER mentioned this and I had HEELS on. This was just this particular place - NOT the dresses -
besides YOU ARE TALL
Nicey - If I hadn't been to 6 other salons and NOT a single one told me that I needed extra material on the bottom - (and I had higher heels at the other places) then I would not have found it suspect - BUT the bottom of these dresses had been obviously hemmed

Wanted to add...that at 5'8' I've never had to add length to any of the BM dresses I wore...and I wore heels - about 2-3 inches. I'd say it was the store.

oops, I only half read it. I hate the stupid added length. and 5'9' is average height!
(for men, at least! )

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
I'm six foot and when I ordered my cousin's bridesmaid dress they charged me 15 dollars to add to the bottom. Are you gonna tell me that I'm going to be paying like tons extra than that for a wedding dress??? I was thinking like 50-75 more for wedding dress TOPS! AHHHHHH money floats out of here like water!

I would call the design myself and ask their office how long the dress is in standard form. then you will know asap if the place is lying to you.

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
Michelle I have called 3 places and asked in general and they all laughed and said NO I would NOT have to do that -as I said it was just strange that dresses that I tried on that morning suddenly were like 6 inches shorter there than they were earlier that day.
Some people will do anything to take advantage of brides.
As I said I'm just happy that there was nothing there that I was interested in.
although one BM was 5'9' and we ordered hers with the extra fabric...just to be safe...my sister who is also 5'7' tried on the dress and it was just right...we didn't want my cousin to feel selfconscious if it didn't fit right
when you try on the dresses...you should have a pretty good idea if the length will be good from the sample

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
That is a little weird.
I am really short (5 foot) and I even wore heels when I tried on dresses and all the dresses I was tripping over. They were sooooooo long.
I think that is definatly a little shady.

I've been told by MANY reputable salons that if you are 5'8 and above, you need to pay extra for added length. I wish it weren't true.

I am 5' 9' and just went to get fitted for my friend's wedding. The lady kept asking me if I needed more length.I told her that I didn't.I was stepping all over it and my shoes aren't going to have much of a heel. Its probably their way of getting more money out of people.

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
I am 5'9' and had to add extra length to my dress. I think it depends on the dress, I tried on some that did not look like they would need it (seemed to be the dress w. long trains were longer on me) but my dress did. Plus, I figure better safe than sorry, I would rather them have extra fabric to work with. I have been a BM twice, and had to add extra length to both those dresses too. Ah, the joys of being tall

I'm 5'10' and didn't need extra length added. If I had been wearing heels (DH is 4 inches shorter than me!)--I would have needed the extra length. I agree with Michele--try calling the designer to find out the specs!

Re: HMMM this sounded a little shady to us
I would totally understand if they were talking about a train - but the women was telling me the dress will be off the floor without extra material- which is silly -when I'm looking at ball gowns - and honestly I can't walk in the ones I have tried on b/c they were way too long. There was about a 6 inch difference in the length of the dresses there.
