My mother & FMIL both want to wear black for the wedding. However, my bridesmaid dresses are mostly black also. How do I explain to the mothers that this is a wedding not a funeral & they should wear different colors? I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or start a battle-

Well, for one thing, you could say that you want the MOB and MOG to wear different colors to that they stand apart from one another. That way, only one would wear black.

I don't see anything wrong with it personally. Many people wear black b/c it's formal, it has a 'slimming' affect, and the most common color of evening-wear is black.
If they're comfortable in it - let them do what they want ya konw? Otherwise, I would approach your mom b/c you're closer to her and she'll listen. FMIL might turn it into a 'bridezilla' moment.

I have been honest so far with everyone and it hasn't been easy all the time.. but remember it's your day...
I would let them know that you don't want it to look like a wake at your wedding.... maybe they can wear navy or cranberry if they want to wear something darker......
they might be upset but it is worth you having a day that you look at and remember and smile

unfortunately if they like black let them wear it.. i think that blak is very slimming and if one wears it the other will be mad so just let them both wear it..

I agree with you on this one. My mom is wearing a black and platinum dress (mostly black) and when I told FMIL this she got excited and wanted to wear black too. My feeling is as long as they aren't wearing the same dress or anything two tacky, they aren't going to be in too many pictures with the bridal party. I saw my mom in some of the other colors and they just didn't look right on her.

Maybe suggest they wear another 'dark' color like navy blue, charcoal grey, hunter green. I personally wouldn't want my mom wearing black either or my MIL. BUT it's a 'slimming' color and can be very elegant.

I'd say let them, but see if they can mix in some other color somehow.

i don't think the MOB or MOG should wear black to their childs wedding. i think there are other options and that black is not the only choice.

I am not sure, because I wouldn't approach it myself.
plus, I didn't really think the BP, moms and mils take too many pics together... if that if what you are worried about.
