Holding Doors

Holding Doors

I hold doors for people all the time. It's polite and courteous and I do it for men, women, children, young, old, whoever. I appreciate when someone right in front of me holds the door for me. Now here's where I get pissed off...

There's this guy I work with who insists on holding doors for me because it's chivalrous. He's usually outside smoking when I come in and he makes a big production of stopping me and grandly opening the door. It's kind of annoying. Especially on rainy days, or cold days, or if I'm late. He used to do it all the time during cigarette breaks.

Anyway, this morning, he wasn't outside. I walk to the door and I see him just inside the glass door, blocking it, holding up his hand for me to stop with this sanctimonious look on his face. I start to pull the door open and he pulls it closed and holds it!! I said 'Let me in! It's cold!' He pushes it open all faux-disgusted and says 'I was going to open the door for you!' I said very evenly, 'Thank you, but it's cold and I already had the door opened.' He just made this dismissive noise and went outside for his morning cigarette.

Is it just me being cranky at 8:30 am, or does this guy need to get over his chivalrous @ss?

I agree...Although if my arse was cold and he made me stay out there for a second longer than I needed to be I would have yelled at him.

I'm willing to take responsibility for my crankiness... especially pre-coffee! But, dude, He held the door closed for a good 15 seconds! Now time that... see, it is annoying!

Also, I had the door opened already! Why would you slam it closed on me? That's not chivalry!

Yeah, he's a little annoying. Well, 'quirky' is a better descriptor. He's one of those old guys who acts all over-the-top shocked when I swear! He's always pointing out how young and naive I am which is a little vomit-inducing. He's condescending, but not intentionally, so I blow off most of what he says. Generally he's a nice guy.

He uses baby-talk alot though and pretends to act like a 5-year-old (stomping around when he's bored, fake-hissy-fits) Now that's weird.

I've come across people like that -- that have to make a big deal out of being chivalrous... I don't think it's just you, I find it a little annoying too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

It's just a little annoying, I'm not going to yell at him or anything! It's more along the lines of an exasperated sigh or a weary 'whatever...'
