Newsday
A fire at a BP gas station adjacent to the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood has closed down the exit ramp at Exit 53 on the westbound side -- and police are diverting traffic back out onto the westbound roadway, causing a massive backup.

Brentwood Fire Chief William Winning said a gas leak inside the mechanic shop likely caused the fire.

Police closed the exit ramp because of smoke conditions and to allow fire and emergency equipment to access the site. The fire now appears under control, though traffic remains delayed.

The fire began around 2:40 p.m., officials said, near the exit to Wicks Road and the Sagtikos / Sunken Meadow Parkway.

Suffolk FIRECOM reports that two departments -- Brentwood and Central Islip -- responded to the scene, located on Motor Parway. Fire officials said they did not know how many pieces of equipment were at the scene at 3:15 p.m., but said no additional equipment or departments had been requested.
