Re: Home schooling? Purely debate provoking post...
I think its a good option if the schools you likve near are horrible but in general I'm against it - I think children really need the socialization of school (but then again I'm a teacher so if everyone home schooled I wouldn''t have a job)

I am not a fan of it either. I too think that kids need the socialization that school provides.
I am a teacher too and I have seen a lot of research to support social aspects of learning. Our school puts a lot of emphasis on talk in the classroom- having kids talk to each other about what they're reading and writing, how they work through the process, etc. I think it's very beneficial.

I think that IF a child is going to be home schooled than they BETTER be enrolled in some after school sports or activities with other young children.
I have to tell you, I never even really heard of home school until my early twenties, I don't think many are home schooled in NY...but down here in FL...there are a zallion home school'd kids.

Seeing as my mother is proud of the fact that she can't do long division ... I'm pretty glad not to have been home schooled!!

As others have said, I feel that home schooling is okay if the school district really s*cks. Otherwise, it is really important for children to have the socialization of school. They have to learn to both play and work with others

Something I just thought of too- I want my children to see me going to work and doing something I love. I want to set that example for them.

I think going to school and adding diversity into your life is a helpful tool. If I had not gone to school, I would not have been exposed to different races and religions. My parent's only company constits of white people, mostly Irish Catholic.
I think every kid needs a break from their parents and siblings as well.

I am completely against it!
In fact i think it is a little weird that people do it. There is tooo many benefits from going to school to bother home schooling...
So unless someone lives in a severe crime infested area...SEND THEM TO SCHOOL!

Re: Home schooling? Purely debate provoking post...
it COMPLETELY depends on the type of parents who will be homeschooling.
If I lived in a school district that was total crap (which I really hope I don't, but you never know), I would consider homeschooling for a few elementary school years just to lay a solid educational foundation....at the same time though, i think that you can send your child to a crappy school and really be an educational force at home, after school and on weekends. So I would not be able to really answer that until I had kids and was in the situation.
I do agree that school teaches way more than math and science - it's incredibly important to socialize your child...not that school is the only place to do that, but it's a good one.
I am not entirely opposed - especially if the child has special needs that are being neglected by the system.

But I don't think in the same constant 8 hours a day, every day way they can at school. I also think it's important for children to learn to respect adults other than their parents.

yes this is true.
i just think that it wouldnt make a kid a bad person to be home schooled. im sure plenty of people do and have normal healthy social skills.

Oh, of course not I just think that parents who keep their kids home are doing them a disjustice, however good their intentions may be.

no i know, i can see why people would be against it.
i htink it depends on alot though...
like teh parents, the environment, schools, the actual CHILD.... alot factors in.
but, i dont know any kids that are being home schooled so i cant truly oppose it or be 100% for it.
i think for the most part, i just dont see it as big a problem or 'wrong thign to do' as many others. ho hum

totally agree. There was a girl (about 13 years old) at my shower yesterday who has been homeschooled her whole life. She is well adjusted, polite, extremely intelligent and articulate. Her mother is a good homeschooler, but also belongs to a network of other moms who get all of their kids together, teach them in 'classroom' like settings - each parent taking a 'class' that they are the strongest in, and get them together to socialize regularly - the same kids, over and over, just like school. If anything, this girl was way more mature and emotionally intelligent than many 13 year old girls - she had a clarity and calm in her eyes that was astonishing. Granted, she may be the exception, but I was really intregued by her development.
